VETERINARY GYNAECOLOGY AND OBSTETRICS COLLEGE OF VETERINARY SCI. & ANIMAL HUSBANDRY ANAND Definition : Definition Valuable diagnostic tool. Fluoroscope is a device which is used to view an x-ray image on a fluorescent screen instead of on a film, X-ray after passing through the body parts are transformed into visible light which is observed on a screen coated with fluorescent material, either directly or through an intensifying device. It is a special type of x-ray used to project live images onto a monitor or TV screen. Fluoroscopy consists of an x-ray source & fluorescent screen between which a patient is placed. History : History 1896 Thomas A. Edison invented fluoroscopy has been a very valuable diagnostic tool. Also designing & producing first commercial available fluoroscope. Science of fluoroscopy is not new in fact it has been in use since the early 1900’s. Indications : Indications Use of fluoroscopy in ruminants limited, but some value only in sheep, goat & very young calves apart from small animal. Thoroughly evaluate upper gastrointestinal tract, especially esophageal obstruction or diverticulum using a barium meal. Proper placing of catheter in the bronchus for bronchography. Study of birth postures of sheep fetus. Slide 5: Evaluate the presence of blockages eg. Coronary arteries Clinical evaluation of dynamics of the body eg. peristalsis & movement of joints. Study for proper positioning of body parts for a radiograph. Cardiac catheterization & placement of hollow tubes into veins or arteries (I/V catheters). Principle : Principle It is a technique for obtaining ‘live’ x-ray images of living patient. A study of moving body structures similar to x-ray movie. Consist of x-ray source & fluorescent screen between which is patient is placed. X-ray beam i.e. transmitted through the patient, they then strike a fluorescent plate i.e. coupled to a television camera. A continues x-ray beam is passed through body parts being examined & is transmitted to a TV like monitor so that body parts & its motion can be see in detail. Fluoroscopic Machine : Fluoroscopic Machine Shortcomings & Hazards : Shortcomings & Hazards Radiation hazards are greater in fluoroscopy than conventional radiography. Intensity of image very low, smaller details on the screen are most likely escaped. More Radiation hazards to fluoroscopist & other staff even after adopting all preventive measures. Also handicapped keeping permanent records of dynamic images before facilities close circuit TV & Video recording were available. Should never be used as a substitute for non-motion radiographic examination. Fluoroscopic radiograph of Intestine : Fluoroscopic radiograph of Intestine Image of fluoroscopic colon : Image of fluoroscopic colon Fluoroscein Angiography : Fluoroscein Angiography You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
