TED HOSE By Manuel A. Gallegos, RN, BSN & Patty Stottlemyer RN

TED Hose: :

TED Hose: T hrombo - E mbolic D eterrent Hose Thrombo = Blood Clot Embolis = clogging artery P ressure stockings that squeeze blood back to the heart to prevent blood clots in the legs

Blood Flow: :

3 Blood Flow: 3

Effect of Walking on Circulation:

Effect of Walking on Circulation When we walk, leg muscles contract, putting pressure on the veins, pushing venous blood flow from the feet, into the calves, into the thighs, and back to the heart 4

Negative Effects of Sedentary Lifestyle:

Negative Effects of Sedentary Lifestyle When clients are just sitting all day, the muscles are not putting pressure on the veins, and the blood is not getting pushed back to the heart as effectively compared to when the muscle are contracting with walking 5

Surgery of the Hip Increases Risk of DVT:

Surgery of the Hip Increases Risk of DVT Then the blood just sits (pools) in the lower legs, especially in the sitting position, it can cause clots to form Or after hip, or other leg bone surgery 6

What is a Deep Vein Thrombosis:

What is a Deep Vein Thrombosis Deep vein thrombosis (throm-BO-sis), or DVT, is a blood clot that forms in a vein deep in the body Most deep vein blood clots occur in the lower leg or thigh Can cause pain , swelling, or warmth in the leg A blood clot in a deep vein can break off and travel through the bloodstream The loose clot is called an embolus (EM-bo-lus)

Blood Flow / Blood Clots:

Blood Flow / Blood Clots

DVT’s 9

DVT’s may Lead to a Pulmonary Embolism (PE):

DVT’s may Lead to a Pulmonary Embolism (PE) If the clots breaks off from the vein, they can travel up to the heart and out to the arteries of the lungs This can block blood flow to the lung 10

What is an Embolus?:

What is an Embolus? Something that travels through the bloodstream, lodges in a blood vessel and blocks it Pulmonary Embolus : A blood clot carried through the blood into the pulmonary artery or one of its branches, plugging that vessel

What are TED Hose?:

What are TED Hose? Elastic, tight fitting stockings that keep mild pressure on the feet & legs to: prevent blood from “pooling” in lower legs and forming blood clots and prevent fluid from accumulating in feet and ankles in patients with heart problems - Edema

TED Hose: :

TED Hose: Squeezes Blood in leg veins back to the heart

Who wears TED Hose?:

Who wears TED Hose? 1. Patients inactive after surgery, especially hip and leg bone surgery 2. Patients with poor venous (vein) circulation 3. Patients with foot & leg edema - heart problems

What Caregiver’s should know about TED Hose:

What Caregiver’s should know about TED Hose Some people wear TED hose only during the day when out of bed, then take off at night Some wear day and night Take them off for at least one hour a day Keep TED Hose clean, change if wet or soiled

TED Hose Care:

TED Hose Care Launder / wash frequently Cold or warm wash or hand wash Bleaching TED hose is not recommended

Summary TED stands for Thrombo-Embolus Deterrent Thrombo means Blood Clot A DVT stands for deep vein thrombosis An Embolus is something that travels through the bloodstream, lodges in a blood vessel and blocks it The symptoms are: pain, swelling, and warmth to leg TED hose can be hand washed. No bleach
