1969 Highlights : 

1969 Highlights Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin piloted their lunar module, Eagle, to land on the moon. The world watched in awe as Armstrong left the craft and took "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." In France the world's fastest commercial airplane, the Concord, made its maiden voyage, while Georges Pompidou succeeded Charles de Gaulle as the country's president. In Israel, Golda Meir was elected premier. The Stonewall riot in New York City marked the beginning of the gay rights movement. Back in the US, teargas bombs exploded in Berkeley as students battled the state of California over People's Park. Helter-skelter reigned as Charles Manson's family went on their killing spree. Senator Edward Kennedy accidentally drove his car off a bridge in Chappaquiddick, NY. His passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne, drowned in the mishap, and Kennedy's political future was clouded with controversy. 250,000 protestors (mostly students) marched on Washington, D.C. to protest the war. In perhaps the biggest upset of the year, the New York Mets won the World Series for the first time.
