America grew out of three groups of people. : Native Americans Europeans African slaves, brought by Europeans America grew out of three groups of people. Native Americans were here first. : Native Americans were here first. Hunters and gatherers walked by land bridge and by boat from Asia to North America in the late Ice Age about 12,000 years ago. There were many tribes. Some tribes farmed, but never full time. Europeans came from next, from many countries in Europe. : Vikings came from Norway England Netherlands Spain and Portugal France Sweden Europeans came from next, from many countries in Europe. Europeans settled in many places : Europeans settled in many places North America was divided between the French, British, and Spanish. South America was divided between the Spanish and Portuguese. Spain controlled most of South America. : Spain controlled most of South America. Came for gold. Brought disease, which killed up to 90% of the people in North America. Found a mountain of silver in Bolivia and discovered that sugar cane would grow in the Caribbean. They became rich. Controlled the southwest of what would be the US. Pilgrims and Puritans came to practice their religion. English planters came to grow rich growing tobacco. The French wanted to trade, but not stay. The English and Indians Often did not get Along. : The English and Indians Often did not get Along. At first, Native Americans and the British cooperated. As more English came to America and more English colonists moved west, the English began to take Indians’ land. The British were not always tolerant of dark-skinned people, especially non-Christians. Battles Pequot Massacre: 1636 Bacon’s Rebellion: 1676 King Philip’s War: 1675-6 The English also Began to push out the other European colonies. : The English also Began to push out the other European colonies. Before 1700 Around 1750 The Dutch took over the small Swedish colony (near Philadelphia) in 1650s, but then the English defeated the Dutch in New York in the 1670s. In the southern colonies, English plantation owners used slaves to grow cash crops such as tobacco. Most slaves came to the Americas to work on sugar plantations in Brazil and the Caribbean islands. In America, slavery became more important after 1800 when cotton was grown in the South to supply cloth factories back in England.
