A REVOLUTION IS A BIG CHANGE. :

A REVOLUTION IS A BIG CHANGE. A REVOLUTION IS A BIG CHANGE.

How many people on the earth? :

How many people on the earth? End of Foraging Era…….6 MILLION people End of Farming Era … 770 MILLION people Right now (Industrial Era) 7 BILLION people When did population grow fastest???

Two revolutions :

Two revolutions Neolithic Revolution (11,000 years ago) Change from Foraging to Farming era Industrial Revolution (250 years ago) Change from Farming to Industry era

Slide 8:

Era 1 Foraging 250,000 – 9,000 BC

Slide 9:

Foraging When people needed food, they went out to find it in nature: deer, squirrels, mammoths, nuts, fish, fruits, berries, yams, eggs, and more.

Foraging Era: Key features :

Foraging Era: Key features People lived in small groups of relatives. They used fire to cook. They had spoken language but not written language. People couldn’t store foods, so most people in any area had about the same amount of food Humans spread from Africa to all parts of world, reaching North America around 15,000 years ago

Migration of humans from Africa since 100,000 BC :

Migration of humans from Africa since 100,000 BC

Foraging Era: Pluses and Minuses :

Foraging Era: Pluses and Minuses Women and men did similar work and were fairly equal, except for child-bearing. Diet was good – lots of protein from animals, plus berries and nuts. People had more leisure (free time) There were no major diseases (epidemics). No understanding of diet and disease; no medicine; people usually died before 30 Number of people was limited by amount of food resources

From Foraging to FarmingNeolithic Revolution :

From Foraging to FarmingNeolithic Revolution Earth warmed up as Ice Age came to end. Climate became wetter. Occurred on all continents Number of people (population) increased. Large animals were overhunted and disappeared. …so there was less food to eat

Slide 14:

Where did Neolithic Revolution occur?

Slide 15:

Era 2 Farming (9,000 BC – late 1700s)

Slide 16:

Farming Era: A small number of people grew enough food for everyone; cities and trade developed

Farming Era: Key features :

Farming Era: Key features People started growing crops to control food supply. They also raised goats, cows, pigs, even bees. They grew more than they needed. …so population grew faster than ever before. The first cities appeared in around 3500 BC. Civilizations began.

Farming Era: Civilizations Begin :

Farming Era: Civilizations Begin Advanced technology allowed people to farm, write, store food, and make large buildings. People developed writing to keep track of food. People created religions to explain…everything. Communications and trade networks brought goods and foods from far away. Strong governments control food, created armies, and went to war with other civilizations!

Slide 19:

Major civilizations

Farming Era: Pluses and Minuses :

Farming Era: Pluses and Minuses Number of people increases Writing changes how people communicate Civilization, art, writing, and technology develop People travel, trade, and learn from other groups Diet got worse because people ate more grains and less protein. Cities were filthy…diseases killed many people. Priests and rulers had more food than farmers and traders. Farm work was much harder than hunting. Men began to have more power than women Civilizations fought over food, water, and land.

Turning Point: From Farming to Industry: Industrial Revolution :

Turning Point: From Farming to Industry: Industrial Revolution Started in Britain (England) Started around 1750 New technology allowed people to grow more food

Slide 22:

Era 3 Industrial (where we are today!)

Slide 23:

1. Fewer people grow more food, and it is shipped around the world. 2. People work in factories and cities. Cities grow huge. cities factories

Industrial Era: Key Features :

Industrial Era: Key Features Things were now made in factories. Factories used machines that ran on coal or oil. Factories were in cities, which grew very quickly. Industry spread to many countries (like the U.S.). Industrial countries like China become strong. Industrial countries took over land and created empires to get more resources & power.

Industrial Era: Pluses and Minuses :

Industrial Era: Pluses and Minuses Quality of life is good for half the world’s people Information is available anywhere, any time Techology improves life (in some ways) Communication has never been easier 3 billion people live on $2.50 or less a day Global warming results from use of coal and oil to run machines Industry makes weapons of war even more deadly
