SiO4 is the main component. Obsidian consists of over 70% Silicon.
Why its so sharp. :Why its so sharp. When obsidian cools, it cools really fast so there’s no time for crystals to form. This means that the minerals making up obsidian are not bound together tightly, and when they break, the edges are almost atom thin.
The color. :The color. Obsidian is usually black due to Fe304. Sometimes, if the obsidian becomes highly oxidized the obsidian will turn redish brown.
