COMMUNITY TOURISM AS A DRIVER FOR LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT:

COMMUNITY TOURISM AS A DRIVER FOR LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT OBJECTIVES To capacitate and empower communities To grow the local economy To create employment and own business opportunities To reduce poverty To improve the lives of the people living in the community: social and economic To protect the environment, culture and heritage of the community

COMMUNITY TOURISM:

COMMUNITY TOURISM COMMUNITY TOURISM HAS BEEN DEFINED AS: ‘TOURISM DEVELOPED BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE AND RUN BY THE PEOPLE’. This simple definition illustrates the importance of a community in the planning, development, maintenance, management and inclusive sharing of the benefits of a tourism destination and products. The term ‘community’ does not only refer to a rural area. There are many successful examples of community tourism in popular Tourist destinations which meet the generally accepted criteria of what is ‘community based tourism’. The importance of community-based tourism is its emphasis on active participation and empowerment of local (not necessarily ‘rural’) people in the tourism opportunity. It is essentially a collection of businesses that sell a variety of goods and services to visitors.

COMMUNITY TOURISM:

COMMUNITY TOURISM Community-Based Tourism (CBT) is defined by its objectives to achieve local economic development ensure participation by the community provide socially and environmentally responsible experiences for visitors, and bring a positive effect on the conservation of natural and/or cultural resources in an area CBT is a unique, participatory model of tourism, which offers the potential to create tangible and lasting net socio-economic and environmental benefits for a wide range of stakeholders, inside and outside the community Community-Based Tourism Development not only supports community initiatives, but allows direct tourist “dollars” to flow into and stay in local communities.

COMPONENTS FOR A COMMUNTY ORIENTATED TOURISM STRATEGY:

COMPONENTS FOR A COMMUNTY ORIENTATED TOURISM STRATEGY Sustainable livelihoods approach (SL) It acknowledges that, particularly in poor communities, people gain their livelihoods through participating in the development and management of multiple activities rather than just one formal job SL is a people-centred concept which emphasises people’s inherent capacities and knowledge and is focused on community level actions

There is a need to redesign and revitalize South African approaches to Community Development and Community Tourism initiatives The re-introduction of sport in schools may be harnessed to positively impact on Community Development. The development of Sport Coaches, Administrators and Officials at School level provides an opportunity for developing Community Development and Community Tourism Projects through school events and exchange programmes with other communities, particularly in the poorer and rural areas. This will help to create job and own business opportunities to help develop communities and grow local economies . Sport, cultural and art activities, competitions and exchange programmes and events will encourage and grow community development and tourism practices .
