WHO adds a New disease • A new global threat dubbed "Disease X" has been added to the World Health Organizations WHO list of maladies that could cause a worldwide epidemic- even though it doesnt actually exist yet. 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 2

slide 3:

Notable plagues from history Plague of Athens 430 BC: One of the first recorded the Plague of Athens killed a quarter of the city’s population. The disease that caused it is still unknown. • Black Death 1347 to 1353: The Black Death caused by bubonic plague killed some 50m people in Europe in less than a decade. • First Cholera Pandemic 1817 to 1824: The death toll from the first cholera pandemic is unknown but from its origins in India cholera spread worldwide killing tens of millions. There is currently a serious outbreak in Yemen. • Spanish Flu 1918 to 1919: Caused by the H1N1 virus Spanish flu spread worldwide infecting a third of the global population. It killed between 50m and 100m people. • Ebola 2013 to 2016: The virus primarily affected West Africa and killed over 11000 people. It was started after a bat bit a one-year-old boy in Guinea. 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 3

slide 4:

WHO EXPERT PANEL ON X- DISEASE • Experts on the WHO panel say Disease X could emerge from a variety of sources and strike at any time. • “History tells us that it is likely the next big outbreak will be something we have not seen before”. 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 4

slide 5:

Hypothesis on X disease •But Disease X could also arise from the natural world like Spanish Flu and HIV as animals and humans come into ever-increasing contact. 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 5

slide 6:

CHANGE OF ECOSYSTEM LEADS TO ZOONOTIC INFECTIONS • As the ecosystem and human habitats change there is always the risk of disease jumping from animals to humans” said Mr Rottingen. “It’s a natural process and it is vital that we are aware and prepare. It is probably the greatest risk.” 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 6

slide 7:

WHO INFORMS THE WORLD •The mysterious malady is meant to represent a "known unknown" that could be created by biological mutation in the future 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 7

slide 8:

Adding New Diseases to list by WHO • Others diseases included on the newly released 2018 list include Crimean- Congo haemorrhagic fever the zoonotic respiratory diseases MERS and SARS and Zika which has been linked to severe birth defects in almost 30 countries. 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 8

list that includes •Ebola virus Respiratory Syndrome SARS Zika virus and Rift Valley fever RVF 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 9

slide 10:

Is it Hypothetical • "Disease X represents the knowledge that a serious international epidemic could be caused by a pathogen currently unknown to cause human disease 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 10

slide 11:

Can it be a Bioterrorism • The disease could come about a number of ways including as a result of biological warfare or as the result of the sudden spread of a virus similar to the "Spanish flu" which affected large parts of the world and is thought to have killed at least 40 million people in 1918- 1919. 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 11

slide 12:

Source of Infection – zoonotic to human infections • Disease X could come from a variety of sources although it was most likely developed through zoonotic transmission where an infectious disease which usually afflicts animals jumps to humans. 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 12

slide 13:

BIO TERRORISM – AND FUTURE DANGERS •one of the biggest threats out there is one of the oldest: infectious disease which can emerge naturally or be human-made as in a case of bioterrorism. 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 13

Bill and Melinda Gates wrote • Bill and Melinda Gates wrote in their recently released "Goalkeepers" report disease — both infectious and chronic — is the biggest public health threat the world faces in the next decade. 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 15

slide 16:

List of Diseases included in X compostion • Disease X appeared at the end of the following list of diseases for which the WHO determined accelerated research and development is urgently needed: • Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever CCHF • Ebola virus disease and Marburg virus disease • Lassa fever • Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus MERS-CoV and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome SARS • Nipah and henipaviral diseases • Rift Valley fever RVF • Zika • Disease X 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 16

X-DISEASE REPRESENTS • Disease X represents "the knowledge that a serious international epidemic could be caused by a pathogen currently unknown to cause human disease." 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 17

CURRENT PREPAREDNESS TO FACE X DISEASE 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 18

slide 19:

Surveillance systems: •There is a need for systems that can detect early when something is out of the ordinary and concerning such as a change in climate animal behavior or symptoms and health care seeking behavior among people. Such surveillance systems must extend to communities that may be neglected and thus good breeding spots for new pathogens. 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 19

slide 20:

Health care systems • Taking sure that everyone has good access to health care is not just a nice thing to do. It also can help ensure that diseases are caught and controlled quickly before they spread to everyone else. 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 20

slide 21:

Not to create fear But to bring in awareness • The idea behind including Disease X is not to scare people but to spur public health officials into making sure that they are prepared for all threats not just the predictable ones the organization said 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 21

Research and development systems: •There needs to be systems in place to more rapidly develop new vaccines medications and other technologies to combat an emerging epidemic. 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 23

slide 26:

Supply chain and other delivery systems: • Vaccines medications and other products have to get to health care workers and the people to actually have any effect. However many of the systems responsible for such delivery are inadequate or broke 3/14/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD X- Disease 26
