Different Types of Functions:

Different Types of Functions Algebra 1 DeAnn Rompf All data retrieved from: Boggs, R. (1999). Exploring Data. Retrieved January 20, 2008: http://exploringdata.cqu.edu.au/

Objectives:

Objectives The learner will be able to distinguish between functions and non-functions. The learner will be able to describe the difference between linear and non-linear functions when looking at a graph and when evaluating a data set.

Which of the following are functions?:

Which of the following are functions?

Review of Prior Learning:

Review of Prior Learning What makes something a function? Graph Mapping Table For each value of X, there is only ONE value for Y

Types of Functions:

Types of Functions Curves Quadratic Cubic Exponential Power Logarithmic Lines

Galileo's Gravity and Motion Experiment:

Galileo's Gravity and Motion Experiment Over 400 years ago, Galileo conducted a series of experiments on the paths of projectiles, attempting to find a mathematical description of falling bodies. One data set is shown on the following slide. The experiment consisted of rolling a ball down a grooved ramp that was placed at a fixed height above the floor and inclined at a fixed angle to the horizontal. In this experiment the ball left the end of the ramp and descended to the floor. Galileo altered the release height of the ball (h) and measured the distance (d) the ball traveled before landing.
