Types of coins: 

Penny = 1 cent Nickel = 5 cents Dime = 10 cents Quarter = 25 cents Coins are referred to as “cents” Types of coins

Converting to pennies: 

One nickel = 5 cents Five pennies = 5 cents So, one nickel = five pennies One dime = 10 cents Ten pennies = 10 cents So, one dime = ten pennies Converting to pennies

Converting to nickels: 

One dime = 10 cents Two nickels = 10 cents So, one dime = two nickels One quarter = 25 cents Five nickels = 25 cents So, one quarter = five nickels Converting to nickels

How many coins equal 50 cents: 

How many coins equal 50 cents How many pennies in 50 cents? Count by ones. 50 pennies = 50 cents How many nickels in 50 cents? Count by fives. 10 nickels = 50 cents

How many coins equal 50 cents: 

How many dimes in 50 cents? Count by tens. 5 dimes = 50 cents How many quarters in 50 cents? Count by twenty-five. 2 quarters = 50 cents How many coins equal 50 cents

Combining coins to make 50 cents: 

Lets use the least amount of different coins. Start with the highest valued coin. 1 quarter = 25 cents We have 25, we need 25 more cents 2 dimes = 20 cents We have 45, we need 5 more cents 1 nickel = 5 cents 50 cents Combining coins to make 50 cents

Combining coins to make 75 cents: 

Lets use the least amount of different coins . Start with the highest valued coin . 2 quarters = 50 cents We have 50, we need 25 more cents 2 dimes = 20 cents We have 70, we need 5 more cents 1 nickel = 5 cents 75 cents Combining coins to make 75 cents

Combining coins to make 100 cents: 

Lets use all four coins this time. 2 quarters = 50 cents We have 50, we need 50 more cents 3 dimes = 30 cents We have 80, we need 20 more cents 3 nickels = 15 cents We have 95, we need 5 more cents 5 pennies = 5 cents Combining coins to make 100 cents 100 cents

Another name for 100 cents?: 

One dollar So, we have two types of money Coins Dollar Bills Coins are represented by “ ¢ ” Dollar bills are represented by “ $ ” Another name for 100 cents?

Types of dollar bills: 

Dollar bills do not have specific names like “penny” or “nickel”. They are named by their amount. Here are a few dollar bills: Types of dollar bills Using a one dollar bill is easier than using 100 coins Using a five dollar bill is easier than using 500 coins Using a ten dollar bill is easier than using 1,000 coins

Making twenty dollars: 

We can make 20 dollars out of bills just like we can make 20 cents out of coins Twenty 1 dollar bills will make 20 dollars Making twenty dollars

Making twenty dollars: 

We can also make twenty dollars using 5 and 10 dollar bills. Or, Making twenty dollars

Making fifty dollars: 

We can also make fifty dollars with 1, 5, 10 and 20 dollar bills. The easiest way to make fifty dollars is with the highest valued bill. Making fifty dollars + = 50 dollars
