Earthquakes constitute one of the worst natural hazards which often turn into disaster causing widespread destruction and loss to human life. Slide 6: CAUSES OF EARTHQUAKE Earthquakes are caused by sudden release of energy in rocks. Plates in the form of rocks are moving very slowly and earthquake occur when moving plates grind and scrape against each other. The point at which the earthquake originates is the focus and the point on the earth surface ; directly above this is epicenter. Slide 7: HAZARDOUS EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKE Loss of life and property Damage to Infrastructure Topographical changes Chances of fire, short-circuit Chances of outburst of epidemic Bursting of water and sewage pipes Communication means are affected and damaged EARTHQUAKE PREDICTION : EARTHQUAKE PREDICTION Unusual animal behaviour Changes in water level Temperature change Change in seismic wave velocity Images depicting various disaster : 9 Images depicting various disaster Parkfield, CA“Earthquake Capital of the World” : Parkfield, CA“Earthquake Capital of the World” Earthquake in Afghanistan : Earthquake in Afghanistan Slide 12: Afghanistan is considered as a country prone to a Earthquakes . Earthquakes are frequent in the north and northeast, and often trigger landslides. there is always a high propensity for widespread death and destruction whenever an earthquake hits afghan . since the early 1980s, earthquake in Afghanistan have killed an estimated 8,000 people and displaced 4.5 million people .
