Topics Introduction Structure History Working Features How it can be used? Difference between Touch screen and Microsoft Surface Advantages and Disadvantages Applications Conclusion

IntroductionWhat is Microsoft Surface? :

IntroductionWhat is Microsoft Surface? It was the surface computing from Microsoft. was announced on may 29, 2007 in US. Represents a fundamental change in the way we interact with digital content. Is a multi-touch computer that responds to natural hand gestures and real-world objects.

Slide 4:

Microsoft Surface is a 30-inch display in a table-like form factor that’s easy for individuals to interact just like in the real world. What is Surface Computing? Surface Computing is the term for the use of a specialized computer GUI in which traditional GUI elements are replaced by intuitive, everyday objects.

Structure :

Structure Screen diffuse illumination, i.e. top layer works as a diffuser. display is clearly visible at any angle Multi-touch technology. (2) Infrared an 850-nm-LED is aimed at the screen. when the surface is touched, the light reflects back. and is picked up by 5 infrared cameras (similar to optical mouse, on a larger scale). (3) CPU Core 2 Duo processor 2GB of RAM 256MB graphics card WiFi, Bluetooth antennas (4) Projector DLP (Digital Light Processing) engine (as used in many rear projection HDTVs). Screen System Unit Infrared Camera Camera Camera Camera

History :

History In 2001 – Stevie Bathiche and Andy Wilson developed an idea for an interactive table that could understand the manipulation of physical pieces. In 2003 – T1 prototype was introduced which was based on IKEA table. T1 Prototype

Slide 7:

In 2005 – the Tub Prototype was designed. In 2007 - Final structure finalized, interactive tabletop device was built that Seamlessly brings both the physical and virtual worlds into one. Microsoft Surface Tub Prototype

Working :

Working Microsoft Surface uses cameras to sense objects, hand gestures and touch. This user input is then processed and displayed using rear projection. Microsoft Surface uses this rear projection system which displays an image onto the underside of thin diffuser. Image processing system processes the camera images to detect fingers, custom tags and other objects such as paint brushes when touching the display. The objects recognized with this system are reported to applications running in the computer so that they can react to object shapes, 2D tags, movement and touch. Features :

Features Direct interaction: Users can actually “grab” digital information with their hands, interacting with content by touch and gesture, without the use of a mouse or keyboard. Direct Interaction Multi-Touch Multi-touch: Surface computing recognizes many points of contact simultaneously, not just from one finger like a typical touch-screen, but up to dozens of items at once.

Slide 10:

Multi-user: The horizontal form factor makes it easy for several people to gather around surface computers together, providing a collaborative, face-to-face computing experience. Object Recognition: Users can place physical objects on the surface to trigger different types of digital responses, including the transfer of digital content. Multi-user Object Recognization

How can it be used? :

How can it be used? Organizing photos and videos :- User places a digital camera with Wi-Fi on the Surface, table recognizes the camera, at a touch of the screen data is downloaded, digital pictures and videos can be manipulated instantly. Object Recognization

Slide 12:

Planning trips and events User places a mobile phone on the Surface, gets the data about events in the neighborhood, slides them towards the phone and the data is automatically copied and stored.

Slide 13:

Transforming print to digital To share a hand-written paper sketch place a photo on the Surface, it is scanned automatically, displayed on the Surface and can be manipulated directly.

Slide 14:

Creating music playlists browse through a music library, choose data by literally picking favorite artists, and drag it to your mp3-player.

Difference between Touch screen and Microsoft Surface :

Difference between Touch screen and Microsoft Surface Touch Screen Single User Environment Unable to recognize objects Unable to scan automatically Single Touch Microsoft Surface Multi User Environment Able to recognize objects Able to scan automatically Multi Touch

Advantages and Disadvantages :

Advantages and Disadvantages Pros 4 features Multi-Touch Object Recognization Multi-User Direct Interaction Designing made easier Time saving by eliminating many processes New and improved learning experience Cons camera calibration requires high precision security and privacy issues Surface can’t sense pressure Not portable and very expensive

Application :

In business Application :- Harrah’s Entertainment AT&T, T-Mobile Disney Innovations House in California In home :- For playing games with family or friends. Application

Slide 18:

Place an order without waiting for the waiter right from your table. In Restaurants :- A credit card with a domino tag fitted on the bottom is being used to pay the bill and payment is confirmed thereafter.

Conclusion :

Conclusion " A COMPUTER IS ON EVERY DESKTOP“ Now we say "EVERY DESKTOP WILL BE A COMPUTER"
