Students pick out main ideas of what they’ve read and retell them in their own words. What are we doing when we summarize? We are getting the heart of the text. Try to find the key words and phrases that, when uttered later, still manage to capture the gist of what we've read. We are trying to capture the main ideas and the crucial details necessary for supporting them.What do I want you to do?: What do I want you to do? pull out main ideas focus on key details use key words and phrases break down the larger ideas write only enough to convey the gistInstructions: Instructions 1.Read the text. 2.Underline key points or main ideas. 3.In groups of 4 talk about what you read. Compare what each of you underlined. 4.Talk amongst yourselves, what were the main ideas, the theme behind the story; who, what, where, when, why 5. In group create a summarized version of the story in 25 words.Story to Read:: Story to Read: The Grasshopper and the AntSlide 6: The Grasshopper, singing All summer long, Now found winter stinging, And ceased in his song. Look for the 5 W’s. Allow them a few more minutes to read the story again by themselves. Break kids into groups. Students are allowed to create a 2-3 sentence summary of the story.
