Each way has a different way of forming sedimentary rocks. Clastic : Clastic Lithification Compaction Cementation Chemical : Chemical Not formed from sediments in the way that clastic sedimentary rocks are. formed from chemicals dissolved in water Organic : Organic Metamorphic : Metamorphic Meta means change Morph means form Change form due to heat and pressure There are two types on Metamorphism: Contact metamorphism Regional metamorphism Contact metamorphism : Contact metamorphism Magma forcing its way into existing rock low-grade metamorphism (low pressure) Makes nonfoliated rocks Regional metamorphism : Regional metamorphism Plate Tectonics squeeze the rocks at the border force increases the pressure and causes heat from friction Make foliated rocks High grade Igneous : Igneous Means fire These rocks are born from molten magma Formation starts in the mantle Only need extreme heat to form Layers of the Earth : Layers of the Earth Magma : Magma Uniform mixture of element These minerals make up the eight basic rock forming minerals for Igneous rocks The eight minerals : The eight minerals Slide 15: Two types of formation Extrusive – cools in about a week Intrusive – cools anywhere from 1000 to 1 million years You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
