Information graphics, or infographics, as they are commonly called, are used to present information in a pleasing, easy-to-see way. Maps, charts and graphs can present potentially dull, dry facts in a more appealing way than just listing them in a story. Research has shown that more people look at graphic illustrations and photographs than read the articles accompanying them, so it makes sense to use these tools to present important facts.
