Implementation of a working programme on grazing in Socotra:

Summary of activities March-June, 2008 Diana Quiroz Implementation of a working programme on grazing in Socotra

Slide2:

The rangeland management problem Increasing use of water resources An aging forest Increasing population More intensive land use

Background:

Background HOME GARDENS EXCLOSURES HONEY BEE LINES OF ACTION RESEARCH Experimenting with individual (>10m²) exclosures vs. IUCN – World Heritage Site evaluation mission Nov. 2007 Planting and protection of existing endemic trees Develop “bee gardens”

Today’s meeting:

Today’s meeting To inform of the activities implemented within the framework of the working programme on grazing in the island To use feedback for the drafting of follow up activities recommendations To use feedback for self-evaluation (and self-improvement) and for assessing the work carried out until now

Initial findings:

Initial findings

Exclosures:

Exclosures Selected pilot areas: Homhil 10 individual exclosures (containing Dracaena, Boswellia, Tamarindus, and Ziziphus species), 4 “home nurseries” (containing Ziziphus and Boswellia species plus fruit trees). Agreement with inhabitants by means of contracts Diksam 3 exclosures confining 4 adult Dracaenas. Agreement with inhabitants by means oral commitment to protect trees and take care of exclosures

Constraints:

Constraints The high cost of chosen fencing materials restricts areas of implementation to minimum In addition, the unwillingness of some inhabitants to involve themselves on voluntary basis engorges the above constraint Limitations of time: this is just a test!

Home gardens:

Home gardens Training on the advantages of agro-forestal home gardening and the specifics of some plant species found on Socotra (nitrogen-fixing, insect population control, soil erosion prevention, wind shields, water retention, etc) Implementation of “pilot” strategies to identified opportunities for overcoming inefficiencies in home gardening systems: Post-harvest techniques for the preservation of horticultural produce Awareness raising of the importance of better use of in-farm resources (manure, water, etc) and the way to achieve this

Challenges to overcome:

Challenges to overcome Designing a mid-term monitoring programme to measure the success of exclosures Getting people interested on the protection of trees: involve them in acting without expecting immediate material rewards for their contribution Lowering the costs of such interventions Expanding successful implementation actions to other areas throughout the island
