Hopefully these skills will be beneficial to my family so I can continue to build a loving and trusting relationship with my sons and a intimate bond with my husband. Overarching Goal Con’t : Overarching Goal Con’t Is to not solve problems for those around me but put them in the right directions so that they can solve them. I would like to become a better effective listener and stop always trying to get my point across. Strive towards level 1 listening (Burley-Allen, 1995). Overarching Goal Con’t. : Overarching Goal Con’t. As we communicate with others on a daily basis, sound and true interpersonal communication is a skill that requires practice . In order for us to enlarge our communication we must know our needs and seek ways to improve. Enlarging My Conversation : Enlarging My Conversation Our relationships depend on the conversations; if the conversation stops, the relationship can no longer change, grow, or develop. In the end, the more my communication skills are developed, the more my conversations will be enlarged and my relationships, both personal and professional, will be strengthened one conversation at a time. Enlarging My Conversation : Enlarging My Conversation Previously, it was my belief that effective communication was just sending and receiving messages. Enlarging my conversation means: Everything we say and do is a reflection of who we are, and consequently shapes the relationships we have with others. Susan Scott (2006) goes so far as to say that in most cases, “the conversation is the relationship” (p. 6). Background and Behavioral Blend : Background and Behavioral Blend It is important that I begin my journey to enlarge my conversation by defining who I am (Stewart, 2006 p.25). There are many ways to describe myself, wife, mother, soldier, and student. I’m an African American, middle class and female, with all of that describing me I really want others to see me as a Christian Woman. As a Christian I am made of God and saved through the birth, death and resurrection of Christ. Background and Behavioral Blend Con’t : Background and Behavioral Blend Con’t Background: Positive: Very family oriented. Love my family very much. Willing to help any one at any time. Always want to best for others. Negative: Someone who will always be take advantage of. Don’t like confrontations. Background and Behavioral Blend Con’t : Background and Behavioral Blend Con’t Blend: My behavioral Blend is S/I which is someone who is kind and gentle: loyal and faithful. With behavioral blend every personality has a unique strength and weakness. Someone who will be taken advantage of. Understanding personality patterns is one of the keys to a positive effective relationship Background and Behavioral Blend : Background and Behavioral Blend Behavioral blending refers to a combination of more than one personality, which is sometimes known as temperaments. A person’s uniqueness is the result of this behavioral blending. Potential Barrier : Potential Barrier Listening is a barrier that hinders communication. Behavioral Blend Undeveloped communication/conversation skills Potential Barrier Con’t : Potential Barrier Con’t Corey & Corey states in most cases we are so concerned with getting our point across that we cannot appreciate what another person is saying or thinking When we form out own opinion about the level and value of what will be said is another form listening barrier.. Effective listening will allow you to share with other people and to make friends and be more successful in communication. External and Internal Noise Pollutions : External and Internal Noise Pollutions Noise pollution is define as noise that is annoying, distracting or harmful to others. External noise pollution are those things outside ourselves that can distract us from communicating effectively. Internal noise pollution is those things inside us that distract us from communicating. External and Internal Noise Pollution con’t : External and Internal Noise Pollution con’t Burley-Allen (1995) names the following as possible external and internal distractions: External: background noises (traffic, machines, clock ticking, humming refrigerators, etc.), room color, television, radios, note writing and email answering. Internal: personal beliefs, stereotypes, daydreaming, rehearsing what to say next and identifying with everything the talker says. External and Internal Noise Pollution con’t : External and Internal Noise Pollution con’t Solutions to noise pollution is to decide to listen and reduce any physical noise. Not listening can cause many problems in our lives, we rob ourselves and other of a precious gift and opportunity to move beyond our misconceptions andto create something new. Burley-Allen (1995), states that a skilled listener is able to hear more than the talkers words; they are able to “listen to the pitch, rate, that the tone of the voice is communication. Plan of Action : Plan of Action I want to be more loving , so I must begin by accepting place as a child of God. I will think of the way that God put us and that first, and become selfless. “Though he was God, he did not demand and cling to his rights as God” (Phil 2:6 NIV). I will be careful not to pass judgment and criticism. In the Bible it say, “Do not Judge, or you will be judged”. For the same way we judge other , you will be judged” (Matt 7:1-2, NIV) Plan of Action con’t : Plan of Action con’t I will be patient and create things, conversations and relationships a little at a time. I will let the other person express themselves and not become frustrated or irritated. I will try and see from the person point of view, even if I don’t agree with what they are saying. Plan of Action con’t : Plan of Action con’t I will not assume, but paraphrase and ask questions for clarity. I will be a positive example in communication for family and friends so they can see the importance of interpersonal communication and ways to improve their communication skills. I will listen in a way to not only hear words, but what the person is truly saying. Plan of Action : Plan of Action I will use Dr. Peterson's (2007) Talker-Listener Card to systematically work on my listening skills. To EMC I must trust God and learn on the Holy Spirit to use the gifts. BIBLIOGRAPHY : BIBLIOGRAPHY Burley-Allen, M. (1995). Listening: The forgotten skill (2nd ed.). New York: John Wiley Sons, Inc.
