Sedation Options for Nervous Patients  Nitrous Oxide or commonly known as laughing gas. This is used for relaxation and to reduce anxiety. The amount of sedation received is controlled by your dentist. Gas can wear off quickly and you can ever drive yourself home after the procedure.  Oral Sedation is beneficial for patients with minimum to moderate anxiety. Common drugs used for this sedation are Valium Halcion Sonata and Ativan. You will be awake throughout the procedure but your senses will be dulled. Medication is provided prior to the treatment which helps in reducing memory or the sights and smells of the dental office.

Sedation Options for Nervous Patients IV Moderate Sedation is beneficial for patients with acute anxiety who otherwise won’t be able to receive dental treatment. It is often used for wisdom teeth or other complicated extractions. Sedative medication is delivered through a small needle or catheter placed in a vein. You will be awake during the procedure. However you will have trouble recalling anything about it later on. Deep Sedation and General Anesthesia. This sedation option is used for people with severe anxiety with a significant gag reflex and for children who need to have extensive work done. You will be unconscious during the procedure and cannot easily be awakened until the effects of the anesthesia wear off.
