Life Application Bible Study:

Life Application Bible Study INTRODUCTION Name of teen band: The Frame Photographer: Iya Dorsey Interviewer: Della Spearman, Bible teacher, East Point Presbyterian Church Interviewee: Desiree Tisdol , Sunday School teacher, First Baptist Church, Stone Mountain, GA.

Life Application Bible Study:

Life Application Bible Study 1. Referring to the message of the article on the teen band and child abuse, what scriptures would you use to describe how adults are responsible for protecting and nurturing children and not abusing them ? As much as love for children is second nature to most adults, child abuse is second nature to some adults. The Bible clearly states how fathers and mothers should treat their children, by not provoking them to wrath: but to bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Eph 6:4. Also, Col 3:21 charges fathers not to provoke their children to anger, lest they be discouraged .

Life Application Bible Study:

Life Application Bible Study (continued) In as much as these scripture passages are directed to fathers and mothers, I believe it is also directed to any and every adult who may have a form of stewardship over a child. Even when the child needs to be chastened, parents are advised to not spare the rod so that the child will not be “ spoiled” meaning ‘do not overlook what needs to be addressed and do not over address what needs to be overlooked.’ Balance is needed and must be weighed right. Prov 19:18 addresses this. See also Prov 22:6.

Life Application Bible Study 2. Explain the responsibilities of parents and adults to prevent child abuse in their communities and around the world. What causes child abuse and why ? In order to prevent child abuse in communities and around the world, it is the responsibilities of parents and adults to go back to the instruction manual (The Holy Bible) to see how God has tucked instructions about child nurturing and training and chastening and a whole lot more in different pages and chapters. These principles can then be applied properly with proven results.

Life Application Bible Study:

Life Application Bible Study (continued) When parents and adults fail to be armed with the proper instruction to raise their children, they become frustrated, irritated, and take it out on the innocent child. A lot of other factors are responsible for child abuse, and cannot be compressed in a paragraph. Hunger, loss of job, lack of interest, lack of love, lack of community connection, stress, sickness, in some cases (not all cases) poverty, and a whole lot more.

Life Application Bible Study:

Life Application Bible Study (continued) Also, words of affirmation and a lot of encouragement and acceptance can go a long way. Investing quality time positively in a child’s life will yield abundant interests.

Life Application Bible Study:

Life Application Bible Study 3. What is the responsibility of the church and name three things the church can do to prevent injustices such as child abuse? The responsibility of the Church is to step in where there is obvious child abuse going on. The church can intervene by praying and then turning any such person to authorities. Some of the things the church can do for prevention include offering sound biblical counseling to the victims and even the abusive parents because they can still be redeemed from their abusive patterns.

Life Application Bible Study:

Life Application Bible Study 4. How do you feel when you hear or see child abuse? I cringe when I hear or see images of child abuse. It is a horrible thing to witness. We become participants when we do nothing about any negative situation. Our silence is our approval. We should not go about witch hunting to incriminate people, but when abuse is witnessed, it should be addressed .

Life Application Bible Study 5 . In Jonathan Kozol's book, Fire in the Ashes: Twenty-Five Years Among the Poorest Children in America, he describes the odds of children succeeding who have been neglected by society. What examples can you give from the Bible of children who were born in poverty and succeeded by the grace of God ? Moses was born into a family of Hebrew slaves in Egypt. By the grace of God and by his parents’ faith, he escaped the sword of Pharaoh as a baby; and by the grace of God he was raised in Pharaoh’s palace and later God used him to deliver the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. Jesus was born into a young, humble ( poor and lowly ) family. He also escaped the sword of Herod as a baby. He is the only one that was enough of a satisfying sacrifice to atone for our sins. He is the only Savior, our Savior, my Savior and Lord. David was born into a shepherd family.

Life Application Bible Study:

Life Application Bible Study (continued) Shepherds were treated as outcasts because of the nature of their occupation. By the grace of God, David later became the hero to kill the formidable giant, Goliath of Gath. He later became the king of God’s people. Out of spending time with God, David was able to write most of the Psalms in the Bible . Many times, David was fleeing death from his enemies. By the grace of God these three chosen men were able to succeed.

Life Application Bible Study:

Life Application Bible Study 6. Name at least three scriptures of hope which may be applicable to children and their families who struggle against defeat, poverty and societal neglect and give others standing on the sidelines, a call to stand against societal neglect. Jer 29:11 is a very assuring Scripture verse about God’s unfailing plans for us. “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” Another scripture of hope is Josh 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; be not afraid, neither be dismayed: for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Life Application Bible Study:

Life Application Bible Study (continued) There are a host of references in the Bible about the responsibility of the society, charging everyone collectively to care for the widows, fatherless, strangers and the poor. Some examples are in Ex 22:22, Zech 7:10. Technically, the children who are raised in a single parent home are fatherless regardless of the circumstance. If the father is not present to raise and rear his seed, the child is fatherless.

Life Application Bible Study:

Life Application Bible Study 7. Is there anything else that you would like to add ? As for me, abuse is very broad-based and not to be relegated only to the physical aspect. Other forms of abuse include the way a child is stripped of their innocence and donned with fashion way too mature for their ages. Abuse disguises itself in the excess of eating unhealthy food when children are allowed to gorge which later manifests in all types of discomforts. Abuse is when we do not filter the words we allow to be deposited in our children, when they are entertained with such unfiltered language; they will process them and surely churn them out. It is our responsibility to do something. Again, our silence is our approval!!!

Life Application Bible Study:

Life Application Bible Study SUMMARY by Cheryl Safford Director, Kinder Kollege Christian School, College Park, GA Why do you think child abuse prevention is an important issue to continuously discuss and come up with new ways of prevention? We must continue our efforts because one abused child can cause harm to the whole community. Some act with violence. Some repeat the behavior on other innocent children. While others withdraw from everyone, thinking no place is safe. When we talk about what is going on we are making others aware. When we know better, chances are we will do better.

Life Application Bible Study:

Life Application Bible Study How can the court systems, school systems, churches and communities work together to prevent child abuse? This goal will be met if everyone is on the same page. Although there are laws in place to protect children they are not enforced. People working with children are mandated to report suspected child abuse. Things in this world have changed so drastically that freedom of expression is overriding obvious signs. Excuses are offered for everything. Therefore, a lack of discipline suddenly looks a lot like child abuse.
