Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is becoming an increasingly important activity to businesses nationally and internationally. As globalisation accelerates and large corporations serve as global providers, these corporations have progressively recognised the benefits of providing CSR programs in their various locations. CSR activities are now being undertaken throughout the globe.

What does “Corporate Social Responsibility” mean? :

Mumbai Indians took on the mandate of education as a primary social issue. Initiative during the Indian Premier League (IPL) season in 2010 to create a movement to support efforts to provide quality education to all children was also undertaken. :

Drishti A unique joint initiative of RIL and National Association of Blind, Project Drishti has undertaken over 9,000 free corneal graft surgeries for the visually challenged Indians from the underprivileged segment of the society. The Company has taken up a number of programmes to improve the lives of the underprivileged. Raigarh, a tribal district in Chhattisgarh, is one such example. :

Conclusion The companies have social responsibility but it is a matter of public policy not a matter of business policy. It should also be realized that businessmen do not have powers to prevent anti-social activities of others. It should also be taken into account that managers are not allowed to spend money on social welfare beyond a limit. Some companies also consider it as an expensive idea. Because, it may often lead to rise in prices. :

Clearly, the views on whether companies have social responsibility have divergent views. But it does not mean that private business has no social responsibility. But it is difficult to fix social responsibilities for the businessmen. It would be unreasonable to expect businessmen to give up their profit maximization motive in favour of social interest. :
