USE OF CAR PEER POINTS FOR USE AS ENERGY SOURCE :

USE OF CAR PEER POINTS FOR USE AS ENERGY SOURCE SCiNNOVATION’11 The Skywalkers… Mapping The Skies Debraj Roy (B.Tech, MAE, Iind Sem) Sachin Srivastava (B.Tech, MAE, Iind Sem)

INTRODUCTION :

INTRODUCTION Driving in the winters has always been difficult while the monsoons also prove fatal. We have to keep several battery operated devices on at various scenarios & simultaneously depletion of charge requires a fresh charging. Though the lead batteries can be recharged but why not harness some energy from the car itself.

BENEFITS :

BENEFITS Seeing the vast usage of automobiles on regular basis & with the increasing craze for more powerful vehicles the power consumption has somehow increased. A huge amount of energy could be stored & used, thus in a way fulfilling our needs without harming the nature

REUSE oF AUTOMOBILE INPUT ENERGY :

REUSE oF AUTOMOBILE INPUT ENERGY Cars & automobiles have several spots within their structure which have a large amount of power & energy hidden within them. The huge engines & the systems have created a huge scope for reusing the energy which they consume. Re-utilisation of this huge energy consumed can prove effective for the people themselves who use the automobiles. One such place in the automobiles is the “Radiator”.

COMPONENTS IN THE USE :

COMPONENTS IN THE USE Being a simple device it consists of merely the car radiator which is already in use & a thermopile which accompanies along with itself thousands of thermocouple at a time. CAR RADIATOR A simple aluminium honeycomb structured device with maximum surface area & internal folds designed to remove the huge amount of heat from the engine using a coolant. The coolant has to be moved to the various parts for radiating the heat

COMPONENTS IN THE USE… :

THERMOCOUPLE It’s just an interchangable & inexpensive junction between two different metals which produces voltage due to Seebeck Effect (Generation of potential due to thermal gradient) COMPONENTS IN THE USE…

WORKING :

WORKING Placing a thermocouple junction in the car radiator while the next node at the coolant chamber would create the temperature difference required for the working of the thermocouple. This temperature difference would cause variation in potential in the different wirings due to difference in their temperature gradient.

Slide 8:

Subsequently for per degree variation in temperature 70uV electricity is generated along the length subjected to the temperature gradient which would increase when these cheap couplings are increased to make a thermopile and provided maximum heat . In usual circumstances the car radiator goes up to 90°C .Thus a large quantity of energy is retrieved from the waste heat

Slide 9:

Thermopile thus formed would generate a steady voltage as the car running would definitely heat up once started & power the lights or the wipers & could even be stored Generally Chromel-constantan has the highest output for such electricity & would prove effective due to its non-magnetic character.

LIMITATIONS :

LIMITATIONS A thermocouple has to be provided maximum area along the radiator combs & folds otherwise minute current would be formed. Car when superheated would provide electricity but the engine also suffers if a lease is provided for it to heat. However still only fog lights or wipers can be run using this energy. For A.C.’s still some of the car battery has to be used.

APPLICATIONS :

APPLICATIONS We can easily power-up the headlights & fog lights which improve vision in the foggy environment.

Slide 12:

We are simply reusing the waste heat from the heat which was to be rejected. Thus we are recycling & preventing global warming as the car heat is in majority utilised up.

RESULT :

RESULT A simple & cheap way to reuse the rejected heat from the automobiles is been suggested by use of thermopiles for powering up various devices in the vehicle.
