The Idea: To gain ability to locate and hence fight traffic in real time: The idea is to generate real time traffic data using social media platforms and make the data available in public domain free of cost and use the data to not only fight(read avoid) traffic but also to find real causes of traffic and hopefully solution to the problem, using high level analytics.

Objective To develop a system which can generate real time traffic data socially using the existing social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. Using this system users would be able to share traffic data on social media platforms. This data will be captured and presented to other users who can use this data to fight traffic situations and/or mine data of their interest.

Approach We will create an awareness with potential users to share traffic situation while traveling in cities and highways using twitter and facebook using (#)hashtags. The (#) hashtag to be used will be (#traffic_stuck) Using (#) hashtags anything tweeted on twitter or shared on facebook can be categorically captured. Example : User XYZ tweets following : “#traffic_stuck at Juhu Tara Road, Mumbai” The above tweet will not only be read by followers if the user XYZ but also all the twitter users who search for #traffic_stuck. The idea is to create a computer program that is capable of capturing all tweets and facebook status updates with the (#)hashtag #traffic_stuck and store them in our database. Then represent this data in form of maps and other illustrative formats which makes it possible to mine important information (commercial) out of it.

Compelling need for the innovation Today, as our economy promises us more leisure lifestyle than the yesteryear we are also faced with a challenge to handle the increasing burden on our infrastructure, as the number of vehicles keep on multiplying, the roads fail widen at the same pace and hence traffic situation is worsening day by day. Traffic problems lead to not only waste of time but huge wastage of crude oil in form of petrol and diesel, which are not only costly but scarce. We need to reduce this loss on a very urgent basis.

Impact This idea uses social media, which is very popular with the youth and using this idea does not require any technical expertise. People tend to share information they think is vital on the social media platforms and traffic everyone will agree is a very serious problem in today's life. Even if 10 percent of people stuck in traffic report traffic data to a service like this, an accurate traffic situation can be generated and represented in form of maps with routes with heavy traffic being highlighted. Once users realize they are benefiting from services like this one, they would be more keen on sharing and hence you develop a very cohesive system where people think of sharing this data as their responsibility. With this system running as desired users will be able to avoid heavy traffic roads. Authorities can figure out root cause of traffic using the pattern of heavy traffic timings and their impact. Other data of commercial use can also be determined based on usage, eg. Advertisers can use this data to analyze where they can get their hoarding maximum number of eyeballs.

Implementation Step 1 : Users need to share traffic data on twitter or facebook in the following format: “#traffic_stuck [Name of the road],[Name of the Location]”. Step 2 : A computer program will capture these tweets and fb statuses and insert them in database. Step 3 : Based on an algorithm, the software will gauge the traffic situation of a particular [Road],[Location] pair. Step 4 : The data based on the output of algorithm will give results in a format which is usable.
