The Innovation:

The Innovation Chosen industry : Public Services Chosen technologies: Software, encoders, decoders and in-audible tones. Objective: To watermark the audio/video content at the time of its creation in recording studios, so as to identify its original ownership and prevent piracy. Approach: The audio watermarking will be done by creating and recording in-audible tones with reference to the unique wave spectrum of the newly created audio/video tracks. Description: The watermarking will be done by encoders which convert the required information into in-audible tones. These tones are recorded along with the original audio or video track. Later, a decoder (software/device) can covert the in-audible tone back to the information in the form of a text which can be seen by users. The decoder will also be able to detect whether the original creation is modified or tampered with. Maximum Points: 10

Compelling need for the innovation:

Compelling need for the innovation There is an immense need to watermark the original audio tracks/videos created by recording studios or movie makers, which help to identify the ownership of their copyright. The watermarking can carry any desired information like the lyrics, recording details, names of the playback singers etc, along with the original audio/video track. This information can be viewed by the listeners/viewers of the content, by means of a software/decoder integrated to a computers, mobile phones, TVs or media players. This provides added value to the customers by enhancing their experience by providing authentic information related to the creation of the content. Piracy of the audio/video tracks can also be prevented and identified by the incorporation of this audio-watermarking technology. Maximum Points: 20

Impact:

Impact Once the technology is implemented, all the original creations in the form of music or video hence forth, will carry the signature/copyright information, which helps to prove the ownership of the content creator. After the implementation and wide spread application of this technology, there will be a stage, where in, only original content could be played by any form of players. Tampering or copying the files illegally will damage the audio watermarking and hence making it unreadable/unplayable on any device. This will ultimately prevent piracy in the future world.   Maximum Points: 30

Implementation:

Implementation The prototype development and trials will be done with the help of Startup village incubators, Kochi. Further development and testing of the product can be done in the Innovation Zone getting promoted by the State of Kerala, at Technopark , Trivandrum. The market study, filing application for patents and preparation of the project reports will run parallel to the development of the prototype (1 year). Depending on the success of the idea, the financial tie-ups will be looked out for. We are also expecting a VC funding based on the exposure expected from the incubation centers. Finally the product mix, the cost of operation and the product pricing has to be arrived at based on the market study. Though the idea is based on a unique technology (core competency), potential completions in the market by similar emerging technologies will be constantly monitored. A realistic sensitivity analysis considering increase in production cost/reduction in sales etc. needs to be worked out, at the later stages of the product. Maximum Points: 50

The Competitive Advantage The competitive advantage is the mode of audio watermarking by means of in-audible multi-frequency tones, which use the wave spectrum of the existing audio track as reference. Sources of guidance: Interaction with several artists for identifying the requirement for copyright protection. Interactions with industrial experts on learning the application of sound waves for storing information. The process of filing for patents will be done only after the prototype development and testing. Maximum Points: 30
