History of Gospel Music – NPR Thomas Dorsey "If a woman has lost a man, a man has lost a woman, his feeling reacts to the blues; he feels like expressing it. The same thing acts for a gospel song. Now you're not singing blues; you're singing gospel, good news song, singing about the Creator; but it's the same feeling, a grasping of the heart."

PowerPoint Presentation:

So What is the difference in a HYMN, SPIRITUAL OR GOSPEL song? Here is Augustine’s definition: ”A hymn is a song containing praise of God.  If you praise God, but without a song, you do not have a hymn.  If you praise anything, which does not pertain to the glory of God, even if you sing it, you do not have a hymn.  Hence, a hymn contains the three elements: song and praise of God .” Spirituals or Gospel songs, are more personal, relating to the singer’s relationship with God and his struggle to find meaning, joy, peace, comfort, etc.
