Roberto died in a plane crash on December 31, 1972 while en route to deliver food and medical supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

The plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after taking off from Puerto Rico. Roberto’s body was never found.

Roberto’s father worked on a sugar plantation and his mother ran a grocery store. His family was poor and as a youngster he delivered milk and took other odd jobs to help his family.

On November 14, 1964, Roberto Walker Clemente married Vera Cristina Zabala in Carolina, Puerto Rico.

Roberto was made fun of because he spoke in a thick accent and had trouble learning a new language, English. He also met racism and discrimination in their crudest forms. He fought these injustices by: 1. Becoming an active defender of his rights and the rights of others. 2. Defended players rights to demand better working conditions and benefits. Puerto Rican Flag

Before his death, Roberto was already considered a hero. He set up baseball clinics for kids and visited sick children in local hospitals. He was so popular, that when he got married, thousands of people filled the plaza outside of the church.

Clemente’s name has been used for stadiums, schools, hospitals and highways in Puerto Rico, the United States, Nicaragua and places as distant as Germany.
