By Aleah The life and death of Frederick Douglass. : The life and death of Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass was born in 1818 in Tuchohoe Maryland. His name at birth was Frederick bailey. He lived with his grandmother besty Bailey. He didn’t know when his birthday was, so he picked valentines day because it was his favorite holiday. Life as a slave was pretty bad. He had to eat food out of a trough like a pig with the other slave children. When he got older he moved to the main house and worked inside. After that, Frederick knew that being a slave is wrong. When he got older he was sent to fells point to be a slave to Hugh Auld. After that in 1845, Frederick wrote a book about his life. Later that year he was forced to flee to England to escape being recaptured back into slavery. British supporters purchased him from his American master and granted him his freedom. He returned to America a free man in 1847. He started a weekly newspaper in 1847 called ‘’the north star’’. That newspaper encouraged slaves to head to the north where it is free. He attended the Seneca falls women’s convention after that he began giving speeches on women’s rights and compared the treatment of women to the treatment of slaves. In 1863 the emancipation proclamation was signed making all slaves be free people. He met with Abraham Lincoln to fight for Equal pay for black soldiers. In 1872 Frederick Douglass moved to Washington d.c. six years later, in 1877, he became the Marshall of Washington d.c. in 1889, he became the u.s. minister to hati.
