Matt's dad leaves him to go get the rest of the family. While his dad is gone Matt gets hungry so he climbs a tree to get honey. He gets stung and he falls into the water but gets saved by two Indians named Attean and Saknis. SUMMARY OF THE BOOK : SUMMARY OF THE BOOK Attean and Matt don’t like each other at first, but they start to trust each other and care for each other. They become friends and teach each other many things. Matt teaches Attean how to read English. Attean teaches Matt how to hunt and survive like Indians do. Matt and Attean’s friendship is what helps them survive. DESCRIPTION OF OUR THEME : DESCRIPTION OF OUR THEME Our theme is SURVIVAL. Survival means to stay alive through everything in life. What you need to SURVIVAL in life: Air, food, water, shelter. How to SURVIVE in the woods: Find food, build a shelter in a safe area, be aware of your surroundings, make a weapon & build a fire. Examples of Survival in the book : Examples of Survival in the book Bees : Bees Matt was hungry so he went to hunt but he saw a bee hive and it had honey in it. Matt climbed up the tree to get some honey to eat, but instead of honey he got stung by bees. After he got stung he fell into the water and was rescued by two Indians: Attean and Saknis. Matt might not have survived without their help. Pages 22-24, Chapter 5 Reading Signs : Reading Signs Attean taught Matt how to read the signs carved onto the trees. Attean took Matt back to the woods and they started reading the signs on the trees. Then they got lost too far in the woods and couldn't find the cabin. Matt had to find his way back home. Page 55-56 Chapter 11 Fishing : Fishing Matt's metal hooks came off in the fishes’ mouths. Attean thought it was funny when Matt kept falling in the stream. Matt watched as Attean grabbed the branch and turned it into a hook. Matt was shocked when he caught a giant fish but it’s too bad that it broke his line. Chapter 18, pages 47-48 The Bear : The Bear We think the bear is really good for our theme because when Matt and Attean killed the bear they were basically saving each other. Apparently, when Matt and Attean walked by the bear cub the mama bear didn't like it. She attacked them, but she didn’t kill them. They killed her. Pages 72-73, Chapter 15 Hunting : Hunting Hunting back in the 1700s was harder because they had to use more basic weapons. Now in 2010 there is a completely different way of hunting because back in 1700s all they had were bow and arrows, spears, snares, knives and they had guns but compared to what we have now they were more simple. Pages 40-41, Chapter 9 Examples of Survival from our lives : Examples of Survival from our lives Survival Examples : Survival Examples We were stranded in the mountains because our car broke down. We were going to my grandma’s house. Survival Examples : Survival Examples We were camping in the woods and we were playing in the water and my cousin floated off on the floaty but we could still see her. When she floated away I felt worried. Then my papa went into his boat and got her out of the water. Survival Examples : Survival Examples Once when I was a baby my family and I went to the store. The sign said “No Kids Allowed” so I couldn’t go in. I had to stay in the car with my brother and some kid threw a rock at the window right next to me. It cut me all up and my parents rushed me to the hospital. Survival Example : Survival Example Once my dad said that we could go camping with him. So my dad went to go get logs for the fire and we roasted marshmallows. In the morning we went to fish for breakfast. Then we heard a big growl. It scared me. Slide 16: THANK YOU!!!
