Autumn of 1975 in Barcelona.: Autumn of 1975 in Barcelona. The man who had ruled Spain with an iron fist for more than a quarter of a century was fighting for his life.
Critically ill he was probably kept alive only to give the powers to be a chance to map the future without the Caudillo. Sipping a wine in my favorite Bodega in the Barrio-Gotico of Barcelona I heard the news of Franco's death at about 8 o'clock in the evening.
There was a strange silence so unreal for a place filled with happy drinkers.
Outside the streets where swept clean – nobody out everybody home.
All of Barcelona seemed to be holding it's breath, digesting the shocking news . And than all of a sudden the streets came alive
In no time the old center of town filled up with thousands of serious looking people.
They came to celebrate and to speak Catalan in public, even booklets
printed in the forbidden language were distributed with no police interference, Barcelona and with it all of Spain had entered a new era.
That night in November 1975 remains one of the most moving experiences of my life.
Most of the photographs before you were taken around the time Franco's
demise showing "my quarter" the Barrrio-Gotico from September 1975 to February 1976.
