CHEMICAL REACTIONS :

CHEMICAL REACTIONS

Chemical Reactions :

Chemical Reactions There are 5 basic chemical reactions Synthesis Reactions Decomposition Reactions Single displacement reactions Double Displacement reactions Combustion reactions

Synthesis Reactions :

Synthesis Reactions Synthesis Reactions occur when two substances (generally elements) combine and form a compound. REACTANT REACTANT PRODUCTS NOTE: start with more than 1 molecule, but end up with only 1 molecule

Synthesis Reactions :

Synthesis Reactions Synthesis reactions are also called combination reactions, because you are combining substances to make something larger (a larger sized molecule). To help us visualize synthesis reactions, notice the cartoon. The skinny bird (reactant) and the worm (reactant) combine to make one product, a fat bird.

Synthesis Reactions :

Synthesis Reactions

Synthesis Reactions :

Synthesis Reactions Synthesis reactions take the basic form of: A + B  AB Examples of synthesis reactions: 2 H2 + O2  2 H2O C + O2  CO2

Synthesis Reactions :

Synthesis Reactions If we know the two reactants we can predict the products Mg + N2  ________ Mg + N2  Mg3N2 3 Mg + N2  Mg3N2 Criss Cross Mg & N to discover the product (molecule) created Now balance the chemical equation

Synthesis Reactions :

Synthesis Reactions For the following reactions, predict the products formed and balance the equation Ca + Cl2  ______ Fe + O2  ______ Al + O2  ______ Iron (III)

Decomposition Reactions :

Decomposition Reactions Decomposition Reactions occur when a compound breaks up into its components, therefore making smaller/simpler molecules REACTANT PRODUCTS PRODUCTS NOTE: start 1 complex molecule, which is broken down

Decomposition Reactions :

Decomposition Reactions

Decomposition Reactions :

Decomposition Reactions For example, water can be broken down into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas. Decomposition reactions take the general form of AB  A + B

Decomposition Reactions :

Decomposition Reactions Decomposition reactions take the basic form of: AB  A + B Examples of synthesis reactions: 2 H2O  2H2 + O2 2 HgO  2Hg + O2

Decomposition Reactions :

Decomposition Reactions So in a decomposition reaction Reactant  Product + Product

UNDERSTANDING CHECK :

UNDERSTANDING CHECK

Understanding Check :

Understanding Check Identify the following reactions as synthesis or decomposition reactions SYNTHESIS REACTION SYNTHESIS REACTION DECOMPOSITION REACTION DECOMPOSITION REACTION

Single Displacement Reactions :

Single Displacement Reactions Single Displacement Reactions are those in which one lone element displaces (pushes) out another SIMILAR ELEMENT which is part of a compound. The lone “yellow” element pushes the “red atom” out of its compound Metals will replace Metals Non-metals will replace Non-metals

Single Displacement Reactions :

Single Displacement Reactions Reactants are always an element and a compound in single displacement reactions. So, AB + C  A + BC COMPOUND COMPOUND ELEMENT ELEMENT AB A C CB

Single Displacement Reaction :

Single Displacement Reaction Think of 1 single male dance partner stealing a lady from a couple

Single Displacement Reactions :

Single Displacement Reactions Metals “displace” metals when they are more reactive More active metals replace less active metals A reactivity series provides us with this information

Predicting Reactivity - Metals :

Predicting Reactivity - Metals More Reactive Less Reactive

Predicting Reactivity - Halogens :

Predicting Reactivity - Halogens Less Reactive More Reactive

Predict which of the following single displacement reactions will take place :

Predict which of the following single displacement reactions will take place K + NaCl  Al + MgCl  Al + HCl  Al + Mg2O 

Double Displacement Reactions :

Double Displacement Reactions Double Displacement Reactions involve two compounds switching their partners. So metals will switch their partners, or non-metals will switch their partners

Double Displacement Reactions :

Double Displacement Reactions Example: AgNO3 + NaCl  NaNO3 AgCl

Double Displacement Reactions :

Double Displacement Reactions Example: K2SO4(aq) + Ba(NO3)2(aq)  KNO3(aq) + BaSO4(s)
