Premium member Presentation Transcript Mercer’s Hunger : Mercer’s Hunger a slideshow made by Teresa George and Daniel Ng Slide 2: Hunger Slide 3: It is on the faces of children in Africa Slide 4: of people in Latin America It is in the outstretched hands Slide 5: It is what millions of people in Asia experience every day Slide 6: But It Doesn’t End There Slide 7: Hunger is also right here In Mercer County, NJ Slide 8: Here are the facts… 17,000 people at risk for hunger in Mercer County Of the 50 states and District of Columbia, New Jersey had the 48th worst rate of participation in the federal Food Stamp Program in 2004 NJ ranked 48th nationally in the subset of working poor families in 2004 If New Jersey just matched the national rate of 60% participation, about 80,000 low-income people would be added to NJ’s food stamp program, bringing about $80 million per year of new federal funds into the state. Slide 9: So What Do We Do About It? Slide 10: That Is Where The Steps In… Food Bank Slide 11: Since 1987, The Mercer Street Friends Food Bank has been distributing food to local food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, child-care centers, senior citizen sites, and agencies serving the disabled. Members of the Food Bank include: And many other area faith-based organizations! Slide 12: The Food Bank receives and distributes more than 1.5 million pounds of food per year, which helps to feed over 17,000 low-income men, women and children in the area who reside in the towns of Mercer County and neighboring communities. Slide 13: Every week, the Mercer Street Friends Food Bank uses up all of its supplies.
