Presentation Description

Presentation by Dan Weir at the 2012 Tri-State Camp Conference. http://www.unplugatcamp.com/ 1) Learn about the different social skills children develop online and at summer camp 2) Learn why it is positive for a child to unplug from technology for a period of time 3) Learn how to communicate to campers and their families why it is positive to unplug Children are plugged into devices continuously throughout their entire day. The average child spends 7 ½ hours a day in front of a screen. Summer camp is unique because children have an extended stay in an environment that forces them deal with the effects of being “tech free.” At the same time summer camp is an environment that fosters social growth. While social media sites foster social growth, it doesn’t have the same positive effects as being outside and playing. Come learn how the “disconnect to reconnect” philosophy can work for you camp. More importantly learn how to communicate it to your camp families on why it’s okay not to be attached to a screen every day.
