Overall it is my goal to be able to take charge of situations and influence their outcome (Burley-Allen, 1995 p. 11). Proverbs 18:13 states “The one who gives an answer before he listens – that is his folly and his shame” (NSV). Enlarging the Conversation : Enlarging the Conversation I can enlarge my conversation by applying my overarching goal to my professional and personal life. Promoting dialogue involves the four D’s dialogue, debate, discussion, and deliberation (Stewart, 2009, p. 551). Dialogue is a dynamic process which can happen between distinguishable moments (p. 565). In fact effective dialogue can reduce stereotyping and increase mutual understanding (p. 569). (Burley-Allen, 1995 p. 68-69) My Plan of Action : My Plan of Action I have learned throughout this course it is important to know and understand our communication needs and the needs of those around us. When I can I would also like to implement Peterson’s talker-listener card, since this provides helpful reminders when it is time to speak and time to listen (2007, p. 5). This would be a good game to play at home to help teach my children the importance of listening to others. Striving to listen at a level 1 is my overall plan of action. With this understanding of being an Empathetic listener I know I will be able to listen from the heart, be empathetic to the speakers around me, and even be able to see where the speaker is coming from (1995, p.14).
