The Butler’s Son Autobiography By Lewis William Wiffen Lewis Wiffen was orphaned before he was sixteen. Born and raised in east Toronto as a member of a respectable, caring but impoverished family, he was catapulted into manhood before completing a secondary education.

Slide 5:

The Butler’s Son Autobiography By Lewis William Wiffen In The Butler’s Son the author weaves together history and a journey of self-discovery to produce a narrative that is both educational and entertaining.

Slide 6:

The Butler’s Son Autobiography By Lewis William Wiffen Composing The Butler’s Son was, for Lewis, like watching a stage play unfold, with the characters coming to life before him and interacting in ways that he had never before recognized. A personal reward for him is a sense of establishing an intimate relationship with his parents… over fifty years following their deaths.

Slide 7:

The Butler’s Son Autobiography By Lewis William Wiffen The author, himself, expresses disbelief at the pleasurable destination of this journey as he says: “I can scarcely believe what I have experienced… the professional successes… the creative and spiritual gifts… the travel… my children who have made a significant impact in their own ways… my marriage… and... yes… I managed to put my life story to paper...”

Slide 8:

The Butler’s Son Autobiography By Lewis William Wiffen “Still”, the author says, “there remain two more significant objectives for this life of mine…”

Slide 9:

The Butler’s Son Autobiography By Lewis William Wiffen “I do believe my life has been interesting. There are many colourful experiences to share, some heart-wrenching, some comical and a few bordering on spiritual.”

Slide 10:

The Butler’s Son Autobiography By Lewis William Wiffen “My first bed was in a stable … I was born in North Toronto, on February 15, 1938. At that time my father, Edwin Wiffen, was butler to the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Albert Matthews (see figure 2.1). Staff quarters were above the stable… or carriage house.”

Slide 11:

The Butler’s Son Autobiography By Lewis William Wiffen “Before leaving England my father was employed as a footman by an English nobleman, the Rt. Hon. the Lord Tweedsmuir, John Buchan (Figure 2.5). Buchan began his career in law but was more noted as a politician and became Governor General of Canada, during the tenure of Prime Minister William Lyon McKenzie King, in 1935. His reputation as author of literary works of all kinds rivals his political career.”
