HISTORY OF AVIATION : HISTORY OF AVIATION Since time unknown man has wanted to ape the birds & be one to fly. But it was only in the mid 19th Century that he was successful in his endeavour. It began with the "Airship' -an elliptical ball of silk, filled with hydrogen, to which a wooden boat was attached at the base. Six to eight men propelled the Airship using the ropes attached to the balloon, very much like how a parachutist manoeuvres his parachute. It was only in the early 20th Century that with many experiments with gliders & dirigibles (balloons) that on 17th December 1903, two brothers - Orville & Wilbur Wright, of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA, capped four years of research & design work with a 120 foot, 12 seconds long flight in a powered machine which was heavier than air. Slide 5: The first: person to fly as a passenger was Leon Delagrange, who rode with French pilot Henri Farman from a meadow outside of Paris in 1908. Charles Furnas became the first American airplane passenger when he flew with Orville Wright at Kitty Hawk later that year. The first scheduled air service began in Florida on January 1,1914. Glenn Curtiss had designed a plane that could take off and land on water. Thomas Benoist, an auto parts maker, decided to build such a flying boat, or seaplane, for a service across Tampa Bay called the St. Petersburg - Tampa Air Boat Line. His first passenger was ex-St. Petersburg Mayor A.C. Pheil, who made the 18-mile trip in % 23 minutes.
