Islam and the role of women TRADITIONAL ATTITUDE MODERN ATTITUDE Men and women have different roles in life. Men should support the family and women should bring up the children. The Qur’an teaches this. These are the roles shown in the Shar’iah. Men and women have equal roles. Women can have a career but family commitments come first. The Qur’an teaches that men and women are equal in religion and education. All Muslims are equal in religion.

ISLAM AND RACIAL HARMONY : 

ISLAM AND RACIAL HARMONY Muslims should work to bring about racial harmony because: God made all the races on earth and so people should respect each other. Muhammad chose an African as his first prayer caller. All Muslims are part of one community - UMMAH. ISLAM TEACHES RACISM IS WRONG BECAUSE OF THE QUR'AN AND EXAMPLE OF MUHAMMAD.

A Christian who has fought for racial harmony MARTIN LUTHER KING Was a Christian minister who fought for RACIAL HARMONY in the 50s and 60s in USA where PREJUDICE was widespread (especially in the SOUTH) and DISCRIMINATION was legal He advocated NON-VIOLENT to end the RACISM against blacks and ensure that all people were treated EQUALLY regardless of their skin colour He was inspired by his CHRISTIAN BELIEFS that all people are GOD’S CHILDREN and were CREATED IN HIS IMAGE This meant that people of very skin colour should be given their HUMAN RIGHTS including: The right to VOTE The right to EQUAL PAY in ANY JOB of their choosing The right not to be SEGREGATED from others

SOME MUSLIMS believe that all religions are just different paths to God. The Qur’an says only Muslims will go to heaven The Qur’an says those who give up the faith deserve to die.
