Where is Tanzania? Officially the United Republic of Tanzania Situated in East Africa Bordered by: - North : Kenya and Uganda - West : Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo - South : Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. - Eastern border : the Indian Ocean.


History In the early first millennium AD: Travelers and tradesmen from the Persian Gulf and western India In the late 19th century: Tanzania was conquered by Imperial Germany, and was provided European education, science, mathematics, and engineering, as well as the German language. Swahili was the main medium of instruction → To enable the native to be used in government administration.


History After the World War I: British Mandate The British continued the German pattern of using Swahili as the medium of instruction. However, as Africans discovered that knowledge of English was associated with higher pay, English began to force out Swahili as the language of instruction in high schools and universities. It was common to use English as the medium of instruction from the fourth grade on. Swahili was used in the lower grades. April 26 1964: an independent nation.

Function of Language Swahili: National and official language Used as lingual franca (the unifying language) between different ethnic groups In Educational System: the language of instruction (enables Tanzania’s students to keep in touch with their cultural values and heritage) In secondary education, Swahili is compulsory, and students must receive a passing score in this subject.
