PTSD can be very difficult to deal with. It can be the result of a past trauma. However it affects a person’s currently life. Often they don’t understand what is going on. They don’t have a grasp on the triggers or the emotional connection that it brings. This can make it hard for them to express how they feel or to communicate with others what is going on. The use of hypnosis can help someone with PTSD identify their triggers and find better ways to cope with them. This can help them to have a better future and to feel in control of their life again. It can help them to work through the emotions and to stop allowing the past to have a negative influence on what is taking shape in their lives.

slide 2:

Why does it Work Often the symptoms of PTSD are subconscious. This makes it harder to identify them through counseling. Too often the person tries to hide what they are feeling. This may be out of fear or embarrassment. However this can make it worse and it can cause them to withdraw from those around them. The hypnosis helps the mind to open up on that subconscious level. Some of the symptoms it can help with include flashbacks severe anxiety the inability to stop thinking about a given event or nightmares that prevent someone from getting a good night of sleep. Such symptoms of PTSD can affect every aspect of a person’s life. It can make it hard for them to focus. It can also make it hard for them to trust others or to feel safe. Reducing Disassociation The process of hypnosis can help reduce disassociation which is the result of PTSD. This can help with reducing anxiety and helping a person to explore their emotions. They may be angry over an event that happened or they may be feeling guilty. Often guilt is the result of them not being able to do more in a given situation.

slide 3:

If they survived a situation when others didn’t that often triggers feelings of guilt and remorse. While they are happy to be alive they are upset that they weren’t able to help someone else survive the ordeal. They may feel they aren’t worthy of living when someone else really was. All of this can make it hard to let go of that event. The process of hypnosis allows the mind to be able to fully focus and concentrate. It may take several sessions to get to the core of the underlying feelings emotions and what really occurred with that event. The conscious mind often blocks out part of such events in an effort to protect someone. The subconscious though is still reliving it so it is explore to explore all of it. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy The use of hypnosis for PTSD can be useful because it brings more of the underlying issues to light. It allows the professional to work with the patient and get to the core of what is bothering them. Once that information is assessed cognitive behaviour therapy is often part of the solution. This includes making sure the patient is able to identify their triggers and recognise feelings. While they can’t control all of the variables that go on around them knowing they can identify what is taking place gives them a way to make a better choice of how they will respond. It takes time for these new behaviours to become second nature. When a trigger is present they will have to focus on the solution and the methods they have been taught so anxiety doesn’t take control.
