A Juxtaposition between the 1919 White Sox Scandal and The Great Gatsby :

A Juxtaposition between the 1919 White Sox Scandal and The Great Gatsby By: Collin Palmer

Slide 2:

The 1919 Black Sox Scandal was when several players on the Chicago White Sox baseball team accepted bribes to intentionally lose the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds, thus gaining the infamous moniker of the “Black Sox”. Arnold Rothstein, mastermind of the bribery of the 1919 White Sox players.

Slide 3:

The 1919 Black Sox Scandal damaged the sport of baseball, as well as the culture of America...the purity and sanctity of the game, as well as a way of life, were tarnished forever.

Slide 4:

There were seven players involved in the bribery, and an eighth who refused to get involved but knew what was happening… that eighth player was Shoeless Joe Jackson, the best player on the team.

Slide 6:

Shoeless Joe Jackson, like Jay Gatsby, was a victim of his circumstances. Joe Jackson was one of the greatest players of his era, if not the best. Along with being a great player, he was a great person who performed many charitable works and used his fame to help others.

Slide 7:

Shoeless Joe Jackson was a unique player during the 1910’s and 1920’s. Many of the players in those days smoke, drank, partied all night, and did other wild things… Joe Jackson was different.

Slide 8:

Like Gatsby, he didn’t believe in getting involved with greed, selfishness, and superficiality. Joe Jackson wanted to be a player kids could look up to; Gatsby wanted to be a successful businessman. Both men sought to experience the realness and humanness of life; however, their societies wouldn’t allow it.

Slide 9:

Upon learning of the corruption of the Chicago White Sox, America was changed forever. The sanctity and purity of America’s pastime was tainted forever. And upon learning of Shoeless Joe Jackson’s involvement in the scandal, America’s youth were devastated. The game they loved, the team they loved, was all a fake.
