Queen Mary, University of London Department of Materials, October 2007 Cambridge Scientific Abstracts : CSA databases (Cambridge is Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA) Web of Knowledge/Web of Science (Science citation index) (WoK/WoS) Information skills training workshop http://www.library.qmul.ac.uk/eng/infopages/engweb.htm Use the Information guides link to find PowerPoint csawos.ppt updated on the Web

Kathy Abbott, Subject Librarian (Materials):

Kathy Abbott, Subject Librarian (Materials) CSA materials databases - wide range of materials databases Web of Science : index to wide range of scientific periodicals (suitable for chemistry, physics, medicine, engineering as well as materials), plus citation indexing Compendex database workshop for engineering and materials subjects : Friday 12 October 2007, 1400 - 1530, Francis Bancroft 1.15a PubMed (Medline) workshop for medical subjects : Friday 19 October 2007, 1400 - 1500, Francis Bancroft 1.15a click Browse the web icon on desktop. Web browser is Mozilla on a Student Service PC

Formulating your subject question:

Formulating your subject question Ask an expert if you can find one! Consider carefully ; what do you really need to know? Think about keywords to describe the subject: CONTROLLED VOCABULARY think about synonyms (different words which mean the same) e.g. composites/composite materials finite element method(s), FEM; freeform, free form American/English terminology e.g. aluminum, aluminium; elevator, lift; aging, ageing; esophagus, oesophagus; strain gage, strain gauge

Abstracting and indexing “information databases” : Web of Science (Science citation index):

Abstracting and indexing “information databases” : Web of Science (Science citation index) only indexes periodical papers! CSA materials databases index conference papers a few patents a few theses/dissertations Micropatent materials patents PLUS periodical papers

CSA Service:

CSA Service includes many useful databases it is possible to search across several different databases simultaneously, which can be useful the controlled vocabulary is different for different databases, so you cannot use controlled vocabulary if you are searching more than one database Online Help and Support is very good You have printed blue guide

Usernames and passwords for the CSA materials databases:

Usernames and passwords for the CSA materials databases On campus, no username is necessary Accessible via Internet Service Provider off campus with your Athens username and password The Library homepage, Click your subject Materials link (not my name) (please bookmark) Information Databases link, on the right To access CSA databases off campus : Go to Information Databases, on left hand side, click QMUL Athens login page link. At bottom of the web page, click Set Athens Home Institution. Click Go Do this on your computer at home or in an Internet cafe, on every web browser you use, so you can use QM electronic information resources off campus. You need to find the Athens login link on the web page

How to access CSA databases:

How to access CSA databases click Bookmarks, Finding Information click Information databases, Materials…. researchers link Scroll down and click any link to a CSA database - first entry for a database is without username, second entry is for off campus access with Athens username click the link for the first entry Change the Date Range, to 1997 to Current When you access CSA, you can click Specific databases, and then click the + by CSA Materials Research Database with METADEX to see every individual database In CSA, you can search across several databases at once. For this example, select (1) Ceramic Abstracts, (2) Engineered Materials Abstracts, (3) METADEX (Metals Abstracts). click Continue to Search

Author searching:

Author searching Use the Advanced Search tab. click the drop down arrow at right hand side and select Author, AU=, key : peijs, then click Search because several databases are searched, author indexing is not very good. It works for an unusual name, e.g. peijs, but if you need to search for a common surname, consult the Help You can change the years searched - search From 1996, not From Earliest Have a look at the references, click a few View Record links See the qm - s - sfx for help in finding the FULL TEXT of the paper

Marking references and Save/print/E-mail:

Marking references and Save/print/E-mail click the box to the left of any references you need, for all the groups of papers. You can only Mark references on the brief display click Save/Print/Email Records button Then e-mail the Marked records from yourself to yourself or Save (to disk or diskette) or Print Postgraduate researchers can use a software package called EndNote to manage your Saved references. Ask your departmental IT support to install EndNote on the workstation you use EndNote Web available for Masters students – see the Finding Information web page

Slide10:

“Principles” of “information database” searching for a subject Find any controlled vocabulary available Find out how to combine concepts If the controlled vocabulary doesn’t help (not specific enough, not up-to-date, peripheral to the subject of the information database) or there isn’t any controlled vocabulary and you have to use uncontrolled vocabulary, how do you use “right hand truncation” and “wild cards”? These concepts will now be explained again!

Slide11:

First important question for an information database How can I use any controlled vocabulary? Indexers use a list of “controlled vocabulary” keywords to index each paper In Compendex, we search the Thesaurus tab for Ei controlled terms In PubMed/Medline, we search MeSH : Medical Subject Headings In CSA (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts) materials databases, we look at different thesauri (plural of thesaurus) for different databases. Some CSA databases do not have lists of keywords

Second important question for an “information database”:

Second important question for an “information database” Most subject questions are quite complex, e.g. (1) Elastomer viscoelasticity and its dependence on temperature (2) Environmental impact of the substitution of metals with composite materials (3) Piezoelectric actuators for biomedical applications - finite element analysis (4) fibre reinforced elastomers for synthetic heart valves It’s not wise to type in all these words! You need to break your search down into separate concepts, and do separate searches Then you combine the results of your separate searches with the Boolean logic OR or the Boolean logic AND, using Search History link near the top of the screen

Slide13:

Third important question for an “information database” If I cannot use good controlled vocabulary, what truncation can I use for uncontrolled vocabulary? What is the symbol for “right hand truncation”? In CSA the symbol is * (asterisk) e.g. nanocrystal* to search for nanocrystal or nanocrystals or nanocrystalline or helmet*, golf club*, fractal* ? is the single-character wildcard for finding alternative spellings. The ? represents a single character; two ?? represent two characters; three ??? represent three characters, and so on. Use within or at the end of a word e.g. carbon fib?? finds carbon fiber or carbon fibre

Cambridge Scientific Abstracts materials databases : CSA:

Cambridge Scientific Abstracts materials databases : CSA Where is the “controlled vocabulary”? If you are searching Engineered Materials Abstracts, you can use the Search Tools tab, Thesaurus tab, and select Engineered Materials Thesaurus If you are searching METADEX (Metals abstracts), you can use the Search Tools tab, Thesaurus tab, and select Metallurgical Thesaurus click the Search Tools tab, and then on the Thesaurus tab. You can click the drop down arrow by Select a Thesaurus - you can only search one. Select Engineered Materials Thesaurus

CSA subject search : Coupon test data and the mechanical properties of fibre composite components:

CSA subject search : Coupon test data and the mechanical properties of fibre composite components Break down the search into separate concepts In the box Browse Thesaurus for, key fibre composites. click Go. You do not find a suitable term, you will see the spelling Fibers. Try again with (American spelling) : fiber composites. click the link for Fiber composites. You will see Terms related to composite materials : the hierarchy of terms Broader Terms : more general Narrower Terms : more specific, a part or sub-section of the term you searched Related Terms : not “up the hierarchy” or “down the hierarchy”, but related in some way

Coupon test data and the mechanical properties of fibre composite components (2):

Coupon test data and the mechanical properties of fibre composite components (2) Check the box by fiber composites Also, you can select all the terms “down the hierarchy” from fiber composites by looking at the LHS : Search marked terms : Use AND to narrow Use OR to broaden Explode to include all narrower terms Click the radio button for Explode ….. On LHS, click orange Search Now go onto the second part of the search mechanical properties is a Descriptor (but I think it is too general to search)

Coupon test data and the mechanical properties of fibre composite components (3):

Coupon test data and the mechanical properties of fibre composite components (3) click the Thesaurus tab In the box Browse Thesaurus for, key coupon test. click Go Coupon is not a Descriptor. So we use “uncontrolled vocabulary” instead click the Advanced Search tab key in coupon*, click the drop down arrow by Anywhere to search Keywords, KW= ( * = right hand truncation), click Search Now we combine the two sets of results with the Boolean logic AND At top RHS, click Search History In the Combine Searches box, key #x AND #y and click Search to search for paper on BOTH subjects

Slide18:

Boolean logic AND Papers on coupon or coupons …. Papers on fibre composites, etc

Mechanics of CSA databases:

Mechanics of CSA databases Look at the full details of a reference by clicking on View Record have a look at the detailed information in a record and the Descriptors Mark some useful records by checking the box Mark this record Then click Save, Print, Email You can click the qm - s - sfx button to try to find the full text of the paper

Format of references retrieved:

Format of references retrieved SOURCE is the title of the whole periodical, the conference proceedings title, the patent, book, or dissertation/thesis. You look for the Source in library catalogues Descriptors are “Controlled vocabulary” used to subject index the paper. You can “feed these back” into your search, and possibly improve it

Web of Science (Science citation index : WoS) - now marketed as Web of Knowledge:

Web of Science (Science citation index : WoS) - now marketed as Web of Knowledge online index to wide range of scientific periodicals plus citation indexing from 1970, updated weekly. You can search for citations since 1981 to papers written earlier, including papers written before 1970 papers enter WoS very quickly - it is very up-to-date, because there is no human, intellectual subject indexing 100 institutions subscribe

Slide22:

click Bookmarks, click Finding Information : Engineering click Information Databases, Materials... Researchers click Web of Science Click on Connect ISI Web of Knowledge.... You need Web of Science See Information for new users, TUTORIALS, EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS Check only the box to the left of Science Citation Index Expanded Select the years from 1999 to 2008 (short range to make searching faster for this workshop) click GENERAL SEARCH Look for the Help In the Author box : key reece mj or reece m click SEARCH see the number of results found

Marking interesting references, and Submitting. The Marked list can continue right through your session:

Marking interesting references, and Submitting. The Marked list can continue right through your session Check the box to the left of some references on the first page which are probably by Mike Reece, QM Click ADD TO MARKED LIST on right hand side Move on to the next page and continue Checking When you have finished 2 or 3 of the pages, click MARKED LIST near the top of the page Select fields to add the abstract, addresses and any other fields you need you can EXPORT TO REFERENCE SOFTWARE or e-mail your Marked List to yourself I advise you to export or e-mail your Marked List to yourself at regular intervals (every 10 minutes) in case your session crashes. Time-out is 15 minutes

Slide25:

1st important question for an information database Where is any controlled vocabulary? Web of Science doesn’t have any controlled vocabulary! So you have to do extra work thinking about synonyms (different words which mean the same) e.g. composites, composite materials; bioengineering, biomedical engineering American/British terminology e.g. hydroxylapatite, hydroxyapatite; etiology, aetiology different forms of words : crimp, crimps, crimped, crimping different words to describe the same material, the same concept or process

Second important question for an information database : how do I combine concepts?:

Second important question for an information database : how do I combine concepts? Most subject questions are quite complex, e.g. (1) effect of structure and environment on the mechanical properties of isotactic polystyrene (2) mechanical behaviour of cellular or foamed materials In WoS, you need to break your search down into separate concepts and then combine the separate concepts with the Boolean logic OR or the Boolean logic AND, using SEARCH HISTORY or ADVANCED SEARCH

Slide27:

Third important question for an information database Since I cannot use controlled vocabulary, what “truncation” and/or “wild card” symbols can I use? What is the symbol for “right hand truncation”? e.g. How do I use right hand truncation for biomaterial*, to search for biomaterial, or biomaterials, or even biomaterially In WoS ? (question mark) represents just one letter (so you could search spectr? to search for spectra, but not spectroscopy) * (asterisk) represents no letter, or one letter, or any number of letters. But at least 3 letters must precede the wild card You cannot use more than 2 wildcards per word. If you do, the second is assumed to truncate the word

Combining complex concepts in WoS:

Combining complex concepts in WoS In the TOPIC box, you could do separate searches for : HA or hydroxy?apatite*, then bone*, then substitut* or replac* Then combine your separate searches using SEARCH HISTORY Display some references by clicking on the blue links Try your own subject search in WoS RELATED RECORDS share at least one cited reference with the retrieved item. Papers which share the largest number of cited sources with the original paper are listed first ANALYZE command is very useful

WoS citation searching:

WoS citation searching We are going to search for later citations to Dr Mike J Reece’s paper in Journal of the American Ceramic Society in 1992 vol. 75 (11) pp.2976 - 2984 We are looking for papers which include, in the list of references at the end of the paper, Dr Reece’s paper click CITED REF SEARCH In CITED AUTHOR box, key reece mj or reece m I advise you not to try to put in the CITED WORK (title of the whole periodical) unless the author’s name is a common name - authors do not write very many papers in any one year. If you do put in the CITED WORK, copy and paste from an index In the CITED YEAR box, key 1992 click SEARCH

Slide30:

Citations to Dr Reece’s paper note that the 2nd and 3rd references are to the same publication. There is no editing of this database : it is just raw data Cited works in blue are available as full references in the database : the periodical is indexed … means that Mike R. is not the first named author Cited works in black are not in the database (periodical not indexed in the database, too old, books, conference papers, in process, mistakes) check the box to the left of the paper in Journal of the American Ceramic Society click FINISH SEARCH>> to find articles that cite selected references, the ones you checked

Slide31:

WoS citation searching the most recent reference is listed first. You can click any blue link to see the reference and abstract of the citing paper You can use the qm - s - sfx link to try to locate the full text of the citing paper Web page for Publishers’ e-journals deals at QM Cited References is the number of papers cited at the end of the citing paper Remove self-citations by GENERAL SEARCH for papers by Mike Reece, and then use ADVANCED SEARCH to Combine sets using Boolean logic NEW FEATURES Box on right hand side for sorting results, Marking results, Analyze results, Output results

Saving your query (search strategy):

Saving your query (search strategy) You can save a search strategy displayed on your screen, use ADVANCED SEARCH Remember to LOG OFF at the end of your search to leave a slot free immediately for another user.

Slide33:

How do you find the full text of references to periodical papers, in electronic format on the Web, or in printed format in London libraries? To find periodicals, first check the Electronic journals list If you do not find the title you need, check QM Library catalogue for printed versions If unsuccessful, try University of London libraries, using University of London Union list of serials (periodicals) If unsuccessful, try British Library Integrated Catalogue If you’ve got complicated references you cannot find, do not worry. E-mail the references to me. Or you can make a print-out of the references (we don’t need the abstracts), and make an appointment with me

Queen Mary Inter-Library Loans Service (ILL):

Queen Mary Inter-Library Loans Service (ILL) ILL currently charged at £9.70 per loan of a book (plus about £2 for each renewal of the loan), £6.25 per photocopy, to your department. Postgraduate researchers must first consult their supervisors to check how many ILL requests they can make. Then you may input your request on the Main Library catalogue. Masters students must obtain permission from their supervisors, then contact Kathy. Contacting Kathy : please e-mail Kathy :k.j.abbott [add @qmul.ac.uk to complete the address] with any questions
