Grandma Nobles is spending a few weeks with us this summer. Nana and Pops are taking care of Butterbean while we go on vacation.Slide 3: Here we go…. This area was a Mayan settlement and some artifacts excavated there date back to 700-800 A.D. The Spanish settlers came in the 1500’s and built the Catholic Church on the grounds. A cenote (freshwater pool) is used today for swimming, but was the only water source for the Mayan inhabitants.The Catholic Church built by the Spanish settlers: The Catholic Church built by the Spanish settlersTemple of the Seven Dolls: Temple of the Seven DollsFreshwater Cenote: Freshwater CenoteWe thought this was supposed to be CLEAR water!: We thought this was supposed to be CLEAR water! Kayla decided to sit this one out….Mérida, Progreso, Yucatán Peninsula: Mérida, Progreso , Yucatán Peninsula Mérida is the capital of the Yucatán and the center of their government. We visited the Governor’s palace, Plaza Mayor, and the Mayor’s office, The Mérida Cathedral seen here, was, built from stones of a Mayan settlement. The Mayan culture is very evident in the city. The Yucatecans are very proud of their heritage.The Governor’s Palace: The Governor’s PalaceDowntown Mérida: Downtown MéridaSlide 37: These chairs are used for doing business as the persons sit face to face. It is common for marriage proposals to take place here.
