TV rights & FootballThe Beginning… 1937: BBC broadcasted first football in UK on TV 1962: Enter ITV 1964: BBC launch Match of the Day

TV rights & FootballEnter ITV & Sky…. : 

TV rights & FootballEnter ITV & Sky…. 1968: ITV broadcasted its own highlights programme 1992: Sky won broadcasting right of premier league match.BBC won the highlight package 1995: Sky win rights to live Scottish football and became paymaster of British football.

TV rights & Football : 

TV rights & Football 1998: Sky failed to purchase Man Utd 1999: ITV won exclusive live Champion league matches right for next 4 years. 2000: Sky paid £1.1bn for 66 live matches, NTL won 40 pay per view but later it re-sold to other TV operator. ITV won highlight package.

TV rights & FootballThe Last few years…. 2001: ITV and Sky win race for Champion league. 2006: Sky won 4 of 6 premier league packages and Setanta won other 2 packages. BBC retained highlights rights and was allowed to hold on free to air in UK from 2007-2010

3 Key Take aways… Sky, with enforced regulations means that Sky will never have a monopoly again Pay-per view and free to air channels will continue to pose a threat to Sky’s market position. Technological advances in the industry has resulted in premiership football broadcasting using other media forms
