Slide 1:

Surface Area of a Cylinder

Parts of a Cylinder :

The radius of the cylinder is the radius of the base. The height of the cylinder is the perpendicular distance between the bases. Parts of a Cylinder Height h base radius base Lateral surface

Slide 3:

Surface area = 2 (area of base) + (circumference of base) (height) Symbols S = 2 B + Ch = 2 π r² + 2 πr h B = π r² C = 2 π r How to find the surface area of a cylinder? r h

Slide 4:

Example Problem 3 ft. 4 ft. Find the surface area of the cylinder. Round your answer to the nearest whole number. Solution: S= 2 π r² + 2 πr h = 2 π (3)² + 2 π (3)(4) = 18 π + 24 π = 42 π = 132 The surface area is about 132 square feet.

Slide 5:

Practice Problems Find surface area of the following cylinders. Round answer to nearest whole number 10 ft. 12 ft. 1. 2. 3 in. 5 in. 3. 2m 1 m
