What is a generic rectangle? :
What is a generic rectangle? Generic rectangles help us multiply complicated numbers by allowing us to calculate the area of a rectangle that we cut into sections.
We can cut generic rectangles into different pieces, but for these basic generic rectangles, we will use place value.
56 would become 50 + 6, and 79 would become 70 + 9.
Area of a rectangle is always base · height.
Always remember to write your answer as both a product and a sum.

2. Write the sum of the top as a factor of the product.
3. Write the sum of the left side as a factor of the product.
4. Add the inside boxes for the sum.
5. If possible, find the sum. * = + + + = 30 · 20 = 30 · 4 = 20 · 5 = 5· 4 = + 35 + 24 600 100 120 20 840
