Articles & its Usage : 

Articles & its Usage Introduction, Vowels, Consonants, Kinds of articles and its Usage with Test Exercise and its Answers.

Introduction: : 

Introduction: Alphabets of the English language are classified into 2 popular categories. They’re 1. Vowels (E.g. a, e, i, o & u) . 2. Consonants (E.g. b, c, d, h & z All other letters except A E I O U). Note: According to some Unauthenticated sources, around 400 years back F H L M N R S X & Z were considered as Demy Vowels

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away” Articles are used to give clarity to the sentences. This we can see from the above examples. Even though articles are not considered under any parts of speech it plays vital role in English grammar. Normally it is used before nouns.

Kinds of Articles. : 

Kinds of Articles. Articles are of 2 kinds. 1. Indefinite Articles. 2. Definite/Universal Article.

Indefinite Articles. : 

Indefinite Articles. Indefinite articles are ‘A’ & ‘An’. They’re exclusively used for/before singulars.

Article An. : 

Article An. Article An is exclusively used before the words which begins with Vowel pronunciation. In short it’s used before singular vowel sound. E.g. 1. Ganesh is an Auditor. 2. It’s an acceptance given by Government of India. 3. It’s an excellent idea!

Advanced Examples. : 

Advanced Examples. It’s an honour to Dr. Abdul Kalam. His father is an Honest man. Note: In the above two examples an is used because H is considered as silent letter and its pronunciation begins with oanour, oanest. Hence article an has been used. His friend is an MLA. Here is an X- Ray report. An MBA degree is essential to apply for the position of manager. Note in the above examples, MLA MBA etc starts from vowel pronunciation. Hence article an is used.

Article A. : 

Article A. Article ‘A’ is used before the words which begins with consonant pronunciation. It should be noted that, article A is used before singular consonant sound. Further it should also be noted that article A must be pronounced as ‘Aa’ (less stressed).

Examples for Article ‘A’. : 

Examples for Article ‘A’. Buy a good dictionary. He is a graphologist. What a good idea! He’s working as a steno in my office. There’s a problem in your system.

Advanced Examples. : 

Advanced Examples. There’s a University near my house. He’s a European. It’s a one rupee coin. Note: In the above three examples, the words University, European and One etc. are starts from consonant pronunciation i.e. Yuu…. (University… European…), Waa…. (One…) Hence article ‘A’ has been used.

Definite Article. : 

Definite Article. The is called as Definite article. It’s also called as universal article. Article ‘the’ is used before plurals. Indefinite Articles are exclusively used for singulars. Whereas article ‘the’ is used not only for plural, but also for singulars.

Pronunciation. : 

Pronunciation. Article ‘THE’ has to be pronounced according to the sound of the following word. Before Vowels: The (Dhee). 2. Before Consonants: The (Dha). E.g. Here is the (dhee) end of the (dha) news. This is one of the most popular example of concluding part of English news in All India Radio.

Usage of Article The. : 

Usage of Article The. Incase of usage of article, it’s the article ‘the’, always before plurals. Whenever speaking about any specific or particular thing, article ‘the’ must be used. E.g. 1. The students are waiting. 2. I like to listen the FM radio. 3. My college is at the end of this road.

Usage of Article THE continued… : 

Usage of Article THE continued… Article the is also used before some proper names and authorities. Example: The river Kaveri, The Chamundi hill, The President of India, The Prime Minister etc. Secondly, the things already we referred. Example: 1. Let’s go to the temple. 2. He’s the boy who won the prize.

Usage of Article THE continued… : 

Usage of Article THE continued… Article ‘the’ has to be used before the words in superlative and comparative degrees. Examples: He’s the best student in my class. Ram is the eldest son in our family. The more you read, the more you understand. The bigger part will remain.

Conclusion. Articles are interesting to read/study. But the peculiarity is, in its usage. Try to listen the conversation, read the books/newspapers and understand the usage of articles. Even it’s suggested to the trainers to give more practical oriented exercise in this topic. Also give incorrect sentences and ask the students to correct it.
