Slide 3: A star is made of very hot gas. It produces light and energy. The Sun is a star: a shining ball in space. The eight planets of Solar System : The eight planets of Solar System What is a planet? : What is a planet? A planet is a large ball of rock or gas in space. The Sun’s Family : The Sun’s Family The Solar System includes: The four terrestrial planets, so called because they are composed of rock and metal. They are: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars; The four gas giant planets, so called because they are composed largely of hydrogen and helium. They are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The Sun’s Family : The Sun’s Family The Sun’s Family : The Sun’s Family The Solar System also includes: The moons of some planets: celestial bodies who travel around a planet; The Asteroid Belt: rocks in space between Mars and Jupiter. Pluto: the dwarf planet; it isn’t a planet because it’s too small. Slide 9: Planets are cold and get light from the Sun. Planets Terrestrial Planets : Terrestrial Planets The four terrestrial planets are rocky and dense. They are: MARS EARTH MERCURY VENUS Slide 11: Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and the smallest planet. Mercury : Venus is the second planet. It’s the hottest planet. Venus : Earth is part of the Solar System It is the only place in the universe where life is known to exist. Earth Slide 14: The Earth travels around the Sun. Earth is the third planet from the Sun. Slide 15: Mars is called “red planet” for the colour of its rocks. Mars Asteroid Belt : Asteroid Belt Asteroids are rocks in the space between Mars and Jupiter. The gas giant : The gas giant The outer region of the Solar System is home to the gas giants. URANUS JUPITER NEPTUNE SATURN : Jupiter is the largest planet in Solar System. Jupiter Slide 19: Saturn has an extensive ring system. Saturn Slide 20: Uranus has 27 known Satellites (moons). Uranus Slide 21: Neptune is colour blue. Neptune Slide 22: Pluto is not a planet, it’s too small. It’s very far from the Sun, and very cold. PLUTO Slide 23: The Moon is Earth’s only natural satellite. The Moon The Moon moves around the Earth. : The Moon moves around the Earth. Many planets have moons. : Many planets have moons.
