This is about the First Family of Bollywood: the tale of two great actors, who chose to be partners for life. She made his home, while he made history. Jaya Bhaduri and Amitabh Bachchan personified marital grace, braved umpteen slander storms and became one of the greatest pin-up couples of Independent India. Here is pictorial tribute to the Big Bachchans.

Says Jaya, on her first meeting with Amitabh: "I first saw Amitji at the FTII, Pune. I saw him, I liked him and I told my friends that he has got a personality. And they said, "...but he looks like a stick!" He was very thin and his face was full of his eyes. I remember I fought with my friends and said he is different."

Amitabh was actually considered to play Jaya's man in her debut film, 'Guddi'; the role finally went to Samit Banja.

Slide 6:

"We all, a group of friends, had decided that if 'Zanjeer' (1973) did well, we'll all go for a holiday to London. And it did well. But Amitji's parents objected and said that you can't go for a holiday with a girl without being married to her," says Jaya.

Slide 7:

On June 3, 1973, Jaya Bhaduri married Amitabh Bachchan.

Slide 8:

The wedding was conducted in accordance with Bengali rites and rituals. In order to keep the fanatic Bachchan fans at bay, the ceremony was masqueraded as a routine get-together.

Slide 9:

"I'm letting out a secret. The first date that my husband took me out for is here (Cafe Samovar). That's all he could afford," Jaya revealed recently. (Cafe Samovar used to be a small-time joint at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, where artists, playwrights, poets and film folk frequented.)

Slide 10:

"Amitabh is a bigger flirt than most people know," says Jaya.

Slide 11:

Jaya stayed away from the screen during most of the 80s and 90s, only to return with Govind Nihlani's 'Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa' (1998).

Refusing to get boggled by incessant Page 3 attacks, the Bachchans royally snubbed their detractors though a movie, titled 'Silsila' (1981); this Yash Raj production featured Amitabh, Jaya and Rekha in a love triangle that was very much in agreement with the yarns of the gossip hawks.
