The Constitution : 

The Constitution Three parts to the Constitution: The preamble… describes the purpose of the document Articles… describes the structure of our gov’t Amendments… changes to the Constitution

What does it do? : 

What does it do? Protects the rights of citizens Regulates the use of territory Manages conflict Establishes order and security

Representative Democracy : 

Representative Democracy A type of democracy in which citizens delegate authority to run the government to elected representatives

Separation of Powers : 

Separation of Powers The doctrine under which the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government are not to infringe upon each other's powers.

Checks and Balances : 

Checks and Balances A system established by the Constitution that prevents any branch of government from becoming too powerful.

Bicameralism : 

Bicameralism Having two branches or houses to the legislative branch (Congress) of U.S. government.

Federalism : 

Federalism The Constitution established federalism, a system of government in which power is divided and shared among the national and state government.  Power is also divided among the branches of government. Their powers are limited by a system of checks and balances. Power is exercised by the people. This is done through elected representatives at the national, state and local levels. This separation of power prevents tyranny and abuse of power. It also preserves liberty.

Branches of Government :
