Checks and balances, or the separation of powers, is based on the philosophy of Baron de Montesquieau.
In this system, the government was to be divided into three branches, each branch having particular powers.
Also, each branch has certain powers over the other branches. The purpose of this is to keep balance and to prevent one branch from gaining too much power.
