PROTECTS THE RIGHTS OF CITIZENS Slide 8: The Territorial Clause gives Congress the power to make rules for getting rid of Federal property and governing non-state territories (Guam, Puerto Rico) of the United States. It also establishes a legal basis for freedom of movement and travel through the states. Today, this is sometimes taken for granted, especially by citizens who live near state borders; but in the days of the Articles of Confederation, crossing state lines was a much more costly process. 2. REGULATES THE USE OF TERRITORY Slide 9: The branch of government known as the judicial branch was created to interpret the laws of our country. Under this branch of government, we have court systems that judge right from wrong and manage conflict among citizens. 3. MANAGES CONFLICT Slide 10: The Constitution divides the government in three branches: legislative, executive and judicial. Each branch has specific duties or roles within the government. In addition, there are checks and balances set-up to ensure that no one branch becomes too powerful. All government must abide by the Constitution and follow the articles and amendments in it. This provides security that each branches works together and is not more powerful than another. 4. ESTABLISHES ORDER AND SECURITY Slide 11: This week we will be exploring the U.S. Constitution in greater detail. It was written shortly after the Revolutionary War as we learned last week. However, it is still the only governing document for the United States of America. It is "the law of the land." What are we learning about this week? Slide 12: As we go through this week, we will explore the main concepts found in the Constitution such as: Representative Democracy Bicameralism Checks and Balances Separation of Powers Federalism.
