TEENAGE PREGNANCY http://www.hsj.co.uk/topics/childrens-services By: Josefina Curiel

Slide 2:

Teenage pregnancy is the one of the most common issue that affect any nation, specially the United States. We know that having a baby is a big responsibility and it will change the life of everyone. “Teenage pregnancy is formally defined as a pregnancy in a young woman who has not reached her 20th birthday when the pregnancy ends, regardless of whether the woman is married or is legally an adult (age 14 to 21, depending on the country).” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_pregnancy The next video is an example how a baby can change the life of a teenager. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-C9lGucReoc

Slide 3:

According to the experts, the rate of teen pregnancy has increased after two decades making the United States the country with the high rates in the western world. “Teen pregnancy rates in the United States declined steadily from 1991 to 2005—from 60 out of 1000 teenagers in 1991 to 40.5 out of 1000 in 2005. However, the teen pregnancy rate increased for two years in a row in 2006 and 2007—to more than 42 out of 1000. Approximately one-third of young women in the United States become pregnant during their teens. More than 80% of teen pregnancies are unintended and unintentional. The highest teen birth rate occurs in Hispanic women (83 out of 1000 in 2006). ” http://www.womenshealthchannel.com/teen-pregnancy/index.shtml

Slide 4:

Having a baby in an early age can cause several outcomes for the mother and the baby. According to the statistic, “Teen mothers are less likely to finish high school or get married, and are more likely to live in poverty, reducing their ability to properly care and provide for their children. Their low or nonexistent income makes it more likely that they will seek public assistance and depend on welfare. Teen fathers are also less likely to finish high school, and the jobs they hold will most likely be lower paying then those of men who wait to have children.” Read more on FamilyEducation: http://life.familyeducation.com/teen-pregnancy/57771.html#ixzz189A0cJgM “Overall, about half (51%) of teen moms have a high school diploma compared to 89% of women who didn’t have a teen birth. Young teen mothers are even less likely to graduate from high school. Fewer than four in ten (38%) mothers who have a child before they turn 18 have a high school diploma.” www.teenpregnancy.com

Slide 5:

Babies born to teen mothers are more likely to: • have health problems at birth • be physically abused, abandoned, or neglected • do poorly in school • do time in jail • also become teen parents In addition, teen mother are more likely to have serious complications during pregnancy and delivery because teenage mothers tend to have poor eating habits and are less likely to take recommended daily multivitamins to maintain adequate nutrition during pregnancy. Research show that teen mother don’t have the maturity to raise a child because they still find them their own personality. http://www.health.state.nm.us/phd/fp/Forms/NMTPC%2010TeenPregFacts.pdf

Slide 6:

There could be many reason for this rate high such as peer pressure, low parenting education, less knowledge about the different contraceptive method and the culture. However, the media play an important role in this issue because the adolescents are exposed to many kind of information about sex. “Researchers at the nonprofit organization found that adolescents with a high level of exposure to television shows with sexual content are twice as likely to get pregnant or impregnate someone as those who saw fewer programs of this kind over a period of three years.” For example, the movie Juno talks about a teen girl that want to explore her sexually and she get pregnant . But the point that this movie show is that girls have an option if they get pregnant, give the baby in adoption that they can have a normal teenager life. http://psychcentral.com/news/2008/11/05/tv-sex-influences-teen-pregnancy/3269.html

Slide 9:

In conclusion, the society need to be more aware about this topic because the children from this adolescent are the future. Also, the only way to prevent teen pregnancy is talking about sex with the young teenager, the consequences that they will have if they have a baby such as they will need to work, educated and take care the baby. Also, parents need to teach and show to their children the different contraceptive methods and the right way to use it.
